88 door problem

Those door problems are unique to earlier XJ40s , my '88 buster did the same as well .
How to remove the door panel :
To the best of memory , there is a square tiny cover just further from interior door handle , take it off and see a nut . Remove the nut , wood trim should get loose .
There should be a broken nut inside the unit .
Our experts surely will help you out

I just recently reworked my doors on my 88" XJ40. so this is still fresh in my mind.
1st - I would recommend getting a Haynes manual 49011 (covers 88 thru 94 XJ6 models)
Using a small pick, remove the cover piece located in the inner door handle bezel, should find a No2 size phillips screw there, remove this and then remove the door handle bezel. slightly pry up on the front of the wood trim until it clears the surrounding door panel and then slide it forward about 1 inch, should them come out. with the door closed, you might have some trouble removing the upper door panel, not sure. Hopefully you will be able to remove it, the lower panel will be more trouble, as you need to remove a screw from the bottom of the puddle light before it can be removed. The inner door handle links into the door latch by a cable, where the outer handles use a metal rod linking into the door latch. with both not operating sounds like the trouble is in the latch itself.
I hope this helps somewhat. Good Luck
