Default 89 XJ40 Looking for suggestions

I placed the following post in the Audio Electronics section and wanted to post it here as well in case people don't frequent the other section.

Hi All,

I am interested in upgrading my stock radio on the vehicle. I'm absolutely at a loss when it comes to stereos, but I do have an idea of what I don't want to take on.......

I don't want to change the speakers, they're fine, replaced all about three yrs ago.

I don't want to find myself rewiring the entire vehicle, if fact I would like to limit it to simply utilizing the connector from the stock radio and placing it on the new unit.

I don't need to blow the windows out with massive wattage. It's a daily driver, to and from work, no extended road trips in this vehicle, I have a 10 minute drive back and forth from work.

I would like one with an aux input for the mp3, just in case I have the rare extended trip.

If it's reasonably priced, I would consider one with NAV built in, provided the only additional wiring is for the GPS sensor.

There are so many choices out there I get confused on what to get, or don't trust I'm making a good choice. I want simple.

Hope someone out there can guide me to a few recommendations. Thanks in advance.

Rob:
I haven't done a car stereo in years, and things have changed rather a lot since then. But I did look somewhat recently at Crutchfield.com, whence I used to order such things, and I don't remember them saying whether they had an XJ40 specific connector. My hunch is that you are going to have to splice in the car's original connector to the new unit. I also can't imagine it would be hard at all, once you've determined which wire needs to be connected to which. On the other hand, you could take it down to Best Buy and let some 14 year old do it in, like, 5 minutes!

Scott,

Thanks for your input. I've looked at Crutch-field a few times and I guess I need to decide how much to spend. I guess low-end will be best for my use, just have to get over the fear on not having a major electronic meltdown with the car

I hear Jags are very fickle when you try to add foreign components to them.....they like to keep themselves .... pure

Hey Rob, I'm sure you're aware of this but according to my old motorhead friends almost all electrical problems on modern cars can be attributed to fitting after-market stereos ..not trying to dissuade you but just be careful, ok?

Lawrence,

I hear you. I'm really surprised at the lack of response on this topic. I can't be the only one whose radio has gone south.
