I don't even have this system on my Euro 92, just not there.

I recently did.
Then my transmition blew a seal....
Im not totaly convinced the two are at all related!?.

But!
Its an emmitions thing.
It pushes air into the exhaust. Not in itself a dramatic thing. But consider that there is a O2 sencor in the exhaust and removing the pump could cause the car to run (rich or lean) especialy during startup.

If your in the US and you live in a state where they have emitions tests or smog tests. I strongly recomend you keep that on there, just in case!.

Curious to get feedback from any others; I'd like to do away with the air pump and just want to be sure it won't produce any VCM faults

Gents:
I'm sorry, but this is perhaps a learning opportunity for me. If the AIR system were malfunctioning, wouldn't you fix or repair it? Why would you just take it off?

One of the books says that a problem with the system relay or circuit should through a code 66.

If the Air Injection relay is faulty or removed, then the ECM will report FF66. It only looks for a relay in the circuit (a certain resistance).
The AJ6 has no way to monitor the secondary air injection (there is no after cat sensor).
The air injection is there to help heat the cataverter faster. It serves no other purpose.

People remove the pump for easier access to other components and to clean up the engine compartment. The small belt is a pain to change because the fan must be removed to get the belt around the pulley.

I installed an X300 electric pump (without the electrical power) in my 1992 XJ40 to fill the void and look emission compliant. It fits in the same location as the X300 and looks factory but can be removed in a few minutes (2 hoses and 2 bolts).

When the car is tested for emissions, the cataverter will already be HOT and should pass if it is functioning correctly.

Here in the US, the 1989 Federal version XJ40 did NOT have a secondary air injection pump.
