Default Blinker and Instrument Cluster Lighting problem driving me NUTS

So I've had Baby Jaguar, my new 1990 XJ6, going along pretty well until the other day I replaced the stereo, then I started having a weird issue.

After putting the stereo in I no longer have:
  • Turn Signals
  • Instrument Custer Lighting
  • Hazards
  • Lightings on climate controls
  • Clock

Radio, idiot lights, head lights, brake lights, interior lights, etc. still work.

Of course the first thing I did was take the stereo back out and see of I unplugged something. Then I went through the fuses (ALL of them, even though the computer didn't say any were dead. That's a whole lotta fuses spread between three different locations! ;-) Then I began tearing into the dash and trying to find a possible broken wire or similar issue.

OK, given that it's spread across multiple different (but somewhat related) areas, anyone got a hint on where I should be looking? ANd I really need to get the blinkers fixed before I have another warning from the Kansas Highway Patrol ;-) (Nice guy though, and it was only a warning :-)

(I think I covered all the symptoms and such - if I missed something be sure to ask, I'm stumped!)

Just a thought.....did you check that you earthed the new stereo? It's easy to miss when changing out stereo head units. I'm not sure if your Stereo in your '90 is the same as the one in my '88 but I did a very careful job of tracing all the stereo wires and making a new harness so there would be no problems... I just can't remember the color coding...

Just a stab in the dark, but could you have tugged a wire out of one of the underdash relays by any chance?

I found that the wiring was tight when I pushed my 'new' unit into it's slot a couple of years ago.

Richard: I've got a similar assumtion, but for some reason I can't actually FIND what's missing :-)

JagFix38: I'l double checked it after your suggestion. Nope - all good on that front. :-/

Lightbulb 1990 MY Instruments Locate lighting & Clock Schematic

Hi MidnightRyder and the "Baby Jaguar",

Welcome to the Forum.

OK, except for the turn signals, the common denominator (imo) is problems with the Column Switches (dimmer and variable power supply, aka D&VPS).

It (they) feed those circuits.

Front and Rear Cigar Lighters not work either?

Check the D&VPS for battery power (60) and ground, first.

I've included for your inspection, a two-page pdf in order to aid in the troubleshooting of the Instruments, Locate lighting & Clock circuits on a 1990 MY VDP.

Don't be intimidated - it will make more and more sense the longer you look at it.

Be sure to read the Inputs/Outputs section. It will help in determining what "feeds" what.

Happy Hunting and keep us informed.

Notes:

1. WIRE CODE COLOR CORRECTION
SC1-1 wire is RK (Red with Pink tracer) coming out of column switches

2. Some symbols on electrical schematic:
are direct battery power
are grounds
are ignition switched power

are ignition switched grounds

FYI, I HAD the same exact issues. I replaced the central microprocessor and everything works perfect now.

I too had this exact problem and it ended up being a blown fuse that didn't look blown. It was the 3A fuse in left box A5, I think, labeled lighting logic/memory. Hope you get it figured out!
