Default blower motor replace, 92 with 88

Have read many posts on the common blower motor issues and I have had the common problem of water leaking onto floor and blower only working on high. They stopped working completely a while back. All fuses are good. Have removed right blower and it's seized, looks like it's been sitting in water. There is a 1988 XJ6 with blown head gasket for sale near my location with working blower motors and some other parts I could use. Anyone know if you can directly replace the whole blower motor housing from an 88 into a 92? vin 652920

I am almost positive that the 2 can be made into one working unit BUT they probably are NOT a direct 'plugin' swap.

I have about 15 or 20 used blowers from XJ6 series III to XJ8 and I can usually replace components into a faulty unit to get it working again with the combinations of motors and speed control units.

The harness connectors are different but can be made to work.

Hi rubytuesday,

Since the blowers from the '88 are old too, there's no guarantee that if you're able to adapt them to your car that they will continue working for long, and you may find yourself with non-working blowers again at some point in the near future. Before you consider the swap, it may be worth attempting to repair/rebuild your existing blowers.

I was able to free up a siezed blower fan motor on our '93 by working penetrating oil into each end of the motor shaft and gradually turning the fan a little in each direction until it was free. To apply oil to the fan end of the shaft, use a drinking straw or plastic coffee stirrer to feed the oil down through the fan blades to the end of the shaft. Do not remove the fan because it is balanced at the factory and if you disturb the little metal weights or its orientation on the motor shaft it may wobble. Once you have the motor free, work light machine oil (3-in-1 oil works) into each end of the shaft for a more lasting lubrication.

Blowers that will only run on HIGH usually have a failed Darlington transistor in the control circuit, which can usually be repaired with a new transistor, a couple of diodes and a power resistor, available at low cost from DigiKey, Mouser or other electronic supply houses. See Martin Briscoe's instructions in the XJ40 eBook at Jag-Lovers.org:

Jag-lovers' Ebooks

While you have the blower housings out it's also a good idea to also replace the relays with quality sealed units. Check eBay for sellers offering good Bosch sealed units at low prices.

Cheers,

Don

Thanks, I think I'll give it a try. For $400 don't think I can really lose out. It's got a good antenna which I also need as mine is snapped off and 4 new tires and rims with centre caps, I'm also missing those. I'll update on the blower motors swap. I figured that might be easier than tying to loosen up the currently seized ones but will see, that's always an option. Already getting close to freezing temps overnight here so need those blowers working!
