Default central locking 1989 xj40

Hi there all

I would like to know if anyone can tell me if it is possible to fit a remote central locking system to my xj40
At the moment i can only operate the central locking with a key.
Any advise much appreciated.
I have been told here in Australia that it can,t be done and then the next guy tells me it can be done.but doesn,t know where to go for that.
So all a bit confusing.
thanks

keith

Have you tried aftermarket shops. I know here in the USA, audio shops have kits that can be installed.

I'm fairly sure that your car already has this, even if it doesn't work.

In the overhead center interior lighting console do you see a radar type dome?

If yes then you have remote CL.

If you don't have the separate key fobs for your car, rectangular single button type, then you may need to purchase a set. If you do purchase them be sure to get the transponder unit that goes with them (thats the bit with the radar dome in the center lighting console).

Then look at the programing alarm etc in the FAQ and all the various threads in this XJ40 section.

You are already lucky in that your CL works with a key.

If you still have your owners manual it shows you a piture of it as well.

Keith,
Had the same with my X300, the car has got all the stuff, supposedly, no remotes, Jag want $$$ for each remote, too scroogey for that. Got an aftermarket remote central locking kit from Strathfields, gave me 2 remotes, 1 interface, 4 solenoids. You will use the remotes, interface, and 1 solenoid.

Remove the RHF door trim, attach the solenoid to the vertical rod, ensuring it dont foul other stuff (plenty of room in the X300, yours should be the same). I mounted the interface inside the door panel, basically up near the top hinge, located a 12v in the window switch pack, the earth wire is a simple motor mount bolt, and the 2 wires as selected from the wiring diagram for lock/unlock, so 4 wires in total, done.

Make sure you put the windows DOWN before you try it out, coz if it goes bugga up, you can get inside the car.

I tried to sort the locking system in my car, and apply the interface only to the Jag system, and only succeeded in locking myself out of the car, widows up, setting off the alarm, blowing numerous fuse, tooooo hard, did it the way described above in less than 1 hour, works a treat, and the Jag system is "unmolested".

Check the $$ first for those remotes, it may make the decision for you.
