Default Cooling fan relay DBC11617 refurbishment?

I went for a drive in my 1994 XJ40 and noticed my temps went passed the Normal. I kept it cool enough to get home, noticed the fans werent working so I accessed the Green Relay. I gave it a few taps and its back to working fans. Ive reflowed the solder on a couple of relays in my XJS with success, so Im just curious to know if this relay can also be refurbished?

If you can open it up, why not give it a try? Also - the sensor in the rad is also a suspect ...

I should replace that sensor. Is there a part number that I can use? And just to be sure where the sensor is located. Is it the one on the left side down by the hose? One of the tests I ran, was turning on the AC and the fans did not come on. Once I messed around with the relay, the fans did work. Im suspecting the relay since, it has been wet and cold lately. I drove the car in rain last, and that relay gets exposed to a ton of water. The other thing I noticed was that the relay looks a little puffy at the seams, so someone has messed with it before. Perhaps the moisture has been getting in. Is it possible to relocate the relay to a higher, more accesible location?

The sensor is the only thing with wires emanating from it in the rad AFAIK !

But, just to be sure, check the part number here:

I also have a 1994 XJ6 /XJ40 . I am getting normal temperature readings when driving. When coming off of the highway with the AC on, the car overheats badly. I do see both fans running at that point.

I am going to change the thermostat in case it is stuck open. I was going to also change the fan relays and thermo switches before doing any wiring diagnostics, if necessary. I am having a problem locating the #$$%#%^^& fan relay. It says it is supposed to be somewhere driver's side front (US left) near or under the air filter box. Maybe I am blind but I do not see it, and I am having trouble following the fan wiring harness underneath of there. Can someone tell me where it is, please? Same question for the thermo switches: Is the lower temp fan switch at the top left (driver's US) side of the radiator? What about the second fan? Is that a temperature sensor or a switch and where is it, please? Are there parts which will kick the fans in at a lower temperature this being Arizona?.... Thanks very much. Regards, Bo in Scottsdale AZ

How do you know the car "overheats badly"? Is it because the fans run after you park the car and switch off the engine?

It's quite normal for the fans to run for a minute or two after parking up when you have the A/C running.

The big dark green relay is tucked away to the left of the air box, low down under the bodywork - IIRC not accesible from the engine compartment - I THINK you have to get at it through the grille or from under the car, but I could be wrong about that, been a while since I was in there.

HTH

thanks. The gauge shot to the absolute max after pulling off the highway and sitting in traffic with AC on. I parked to cool it off. It was still over the midpoint and would rise when stopped on red but came right down again when I put it in neutral and idled the car at 1500-2000 rpm. Sorry, terminology IIRC? Regards, Bo

Oh - that's overheating all right! sounds like you're very low on coolant or don't have a thermostat fitted and the coolant is circulating too fast?

First step - pick up a new stat and ring gasket on Rockauto before you open up the housing. Careful with those bolts on the thermo housing, easy to crack the housing/snap the bolts.
