Guide lines 4 parting out 88 xj40
Hello members
I have managed to purchase a 88 XJ40s parts car. In which it will be a shame to tear it down. Still floats down the highway.
What are some guidelines or advice to follow when I start this operation.
Where to start....what to be careful when....what not to miss ( certain parts )....how to properly store....
Cannot keep car intact, already have to many vehicles for my landlord's liking.
Thanks

Wow,another "parts '88",I see these cars all over, for sale very cheap!
Brakes will be the death of these cars,I would save all the hydraulic systems that work the brakes. Most parts NLA.
Interior veneers, good shape?keep the full set.
Door handles not broken?keeper.
Seats in good shape?popular color?
Most of the '88-'89 cars I see over here, are rolling parts stores, with various missing bits, then off to the crusher, sadly.
Just my two cents,cheers,Jim.

Hi Wewillbefree,
The AJ6 engine and ZF transmission are virtually bulletproof, so it's rare that anyone needs a replacement. The differentials only have value if they've been completely rebuilt.
I agree with Jim to salvage all the interior bits that are good, and door handles are always marketable.
Off the top of my head, other marketable parts may include:
All the electronic modules, ECM, CPU, BFMs, etc.
HVAC blower motor housings (whether working or not - they can probably be rescuscitated)
Radio and A/C control panel
The instrument cluster bulbs may be worth more than the cluster itself.
Steering column switches, light dimmer module, ignition switch
Fuel injectors
Throttle body/TPS
Coolant reservoir & coolant temp sensor
P/S fluid reservoir
All hydraulic stuff
Quad headlamps including the internal brackets and exterior trim pieces (some owners of later cars like to retrofit to quads).
Radiator, oil cooler, transmission fluid cooler
A/C compressor and condensor - evaporator/heater coil if you remove the dash
Ignition amplifier & coil
CPS if known to be working (keep as a spare for your driver)
Alternator
MAF
Any good fenders and doors for repairing collision damage or rust on other cars
Power antenna
Rear view mirrors
Grille
Windshield wiper motor
Suspension control arms, hubs
Wheels
Sidemarker lamps & lenses, fog lamps & lenses
Bumpers
Body side moldings
Sunroof motor (if equipped) & overhead console/switch panel
Cruise control vacuum pump, dump valve & actuator
Window motors and door lock actuators
Probably more, but I've personally purchased a lot of the above over the years to keep our '93 in good shape.
Cheers,
Don
