help needed with xj40 boot
I have a 1988 xj40 and the boot no longer opens i think that something has broken inside, the lock turns with the key but the release button is solid also the central locking no longer works so the release button wont do anything.
i know that you can drill a hole on the x300 to release the boot but not sure if that would work with the xj40 the only thing i can think of is to take the back seats out so any input would be appreciated.
thanks

Removing the rear seats won't help you, there is a solid steel bulkhead behind them, to protect you from the fuel tank.
I believe that the hole idea is also the same here. (You are using the Black master key, yes)?

Remove the number plate. With a long screw driver you can trip the lock. It's not an easy procedure. Plan on lots of cussing and swearing. You almost need to bend the screw driver back towards the number plate to catch the lock. It's no fun.
Ken is correct
The number plate mount cutouts in the boot lid here in the states are plenty big enough for reaching into the mechanism rods to release the latch. I imagine that they are similar in Europe. Unless you do this regularly, I always liked having another car in the shop to pull the carpet liner to see exactly where the components are located but poking and pulling seems to work after a while. The rod needs to be pulled UP to release the latch.
