Hey all, check engine light on
Hey everyone, feel like it's been a long time since I been on here...unfortunatly I don't get free web in my dorm.
Just wondering if anybody knows...my check engine light is on and the VCM computer says fuel39 fail39. My cars a 93 xj6 if anybody couldn't guess! Do any of you guys know exactly what that means, and if it's cool to just keep driving with that. Unfortunatly I'm about a 2 hour drive from the nearest JAG dealer, and I don't think there are any jag mechanics anywhere near this bo dunk town I live in.
Thanks for any tips guys.

RE: Hey all, check engine light on
Greetings,
There's a chart under "Specifications " towards the back of your handbook. Sometimes the description only gets you in the ballpark, and code 39 is one such case.
EGR check sensor is a temperature probe in a housing under the intake manifold. If the EGR valve is opening, exhaust gas goes through a tube and into this housing, and through a port into the intake plenum. The temp sensor reads the heat and tells the computer everything is happy.
That could mean the reason for the warning is:
faulty EGR valve
Blocked or leaking EGR pipe
Faulty EGR check sensor
And the winner is: the port inside the intake manifold is blocked with carbon. You have to remove the throttle body and dig it out until the exhaust can flow through. So I presume the check sensor is getting too hot in this case? Never thought about it until now, but I have seen this cause for FF 39many times.
There is no effect on performance or reliability indicated by this code. If your EGR is leaking vacuum, perhaps a slight affect on fueling ratio. Of course with the Check Engine light on, you now will have no other warning if something else is amiss.

I like JTOs diagnosis and the good thing if you wanted to is that the carbon build up isn't a big deal to fix and any local shop worth a crap should be able to check it out if you don't want to wait for a true jag tech. Just tell them to look for a carbon buildup right behind the throttle plate.

We just got hit by that big ice storm in southern illinois, and i wasscrapping off my car with the engine running for about 30 minutes, and I noticed the check engine light turned off. is it possible that the car somehow fixed the carbon buildup on it's own, or is that light going to pop on again fairly soon?
