Lightbulb A little smear..??

Hello,
I'm not too far away from refitting my rebuilt AJ6 Cylinder Head and have a quick question;

My 'head gasket is a PAYEN 'quality' aftermarket item but I was wondering if I should put a little smear of Gasket Sealant (HYLOMAR Blue) around the oil port at the front of the block..??
The previous gasket had been leaking oil by the Dizzy - a common fault I believe..??

Your thoughts appreciated,

Dave.

I don't have any direct experience with AJ6 heads....but I don't see where any harm could come from a little smear.

Cheers
DD

Hi Dave,

The new gaskets are supposed to have the improved seal design around that oil port, but on all the head gaskets I've done on AJ6 engines I sprayed both sides of the new head gasket with Permatex Copper Spray-A-Gasket, based on the collective experience of XJ40 owners on the Jag-Lovers forum who felt the copper spray helps fill in minor imperfections in the head and block. I've never gotten less than 90,000 miles out of a new head gasket, so at the very least the Spray-A-Gasket does no harm:

If Permatex products are not available in Cumbria, there are probably similar products from Hylomar, Loctite, etc.

Also, be sure to fill in any eroded spots you find on the head with JB Weld or similar metal-filled epoxy, and carefully scrape it flush with a safety razor blade, taking care not to scratch the surrounding aluminum. Common areas for erosion are between coolant jackets, oil ports and combustion chambers.

Cheers,

Don

Apologies for the late reply, I'm currently in Assen for the British Superbike race (my one holiday of the year..&#128512.
Thank you Gents - wise advice.
I shall search out some spray and apply as suggested.
Fingers crossed.....

Cheers, Dave.
