Red face Looking at buying an '89 XJR Sport

hey all,

Looking at purchasing my first jag, a 1989 XJR sport 3.6 (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/List...x?id=348373839) Finding it quite hard to find info on them as they seem to have been a slightly rarer model.

The one above seems in good condition apart from the fact that according to the digital dash the entire car is about to explode (tyre pressure low, brake fluid low, everything low or dead) but drives very well apart from what sounds like a 'rubbing' noise from the right rear wheel arch, mainly under braking and uneven surfaces. any ideas on what this could be? . A/C looks like it might need a regas as it only blows hot air. Any other faults I should be looking for. a few spots of surface rust is all i can find.

thanks in advance and go easy on a newbie

That listing has been fascinating me from the moment it was posted.

Is it really tiptronic?

its an auto with the usual PRD and you can move thru the gate to select 2 and 3, so i certainly wouldn't call it tiptronic, just an automatic

You should ask for some engine bay shots.

I love the interior, and the look of that gauge cluster (never mind it's reputation ). Not sure about the exterior.

It's certainly something unique, and I'd like to see some more detailed photos.

EDIT: It's a TWR thing isn't it?

Mighty early XJR very rare, but unless I am mistaken (happens lot), this car is not Supercharged.

No idea about $8000NZ.

If you are looking at it, I would want to poke around underneath behind those plastic sill mouldings and rear/front bumper wrap arounds. These cars do rust from the inside out, and the space up and behind the wheels in the wings is a trap.

Also check the inner wings in the engine bay, where the plastic studs from the mud shields come through the wings, a rust spot and time consuming to sort out.

Spots of surface rust can rapidly become an epidemic, take care.

i've seen it in the 'flesh' twice and it looks very nice, engine bay is tidy. Seems like we have to pay quite a bit more in NZ for jags tho...

I don't know... $8k doesn't seem too unreasonable to me.

Usually I'd agree - Jags tend to be overpriced here, but in this case you're looking at something quite rare.

(NZD $8000 = USD $6100/GBP £3700, by the way)

Wow, that car is GORGEOUS! I love the color combo, the condition looks exceptional, at least in the pictures, and the price doesn't seem far fetched for the overall shape and rarity of the car.

If the seller agrees, see if you can take the car to a Jag expert and have him to a PPI (pre purchase inspection). It could be the best $100 you spend. You will know if the car is mechanically sound, or a nightmare, plus any needs it will have to be taken care of now and in the near future.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.
