My Central Door Locking Sys solved!!
I just want to share my experience solving my central door locking problems in hopes it may help members of our forum who have similar issues. To make a long story short, when I bought my 1990 VDP in 2008, it only had 12k original miles, so it sat in a garage unused or lightly driven for many years, so I had a handful of problems I had to work on. After figuring out and fixing many of these issues I finally decided to tackle the door locking problem. To begin with, all 4 door lock actuators were toast, I don't know how it happened that all 4 would stop working, my guess is they were fried due to an electrical surge or just simply stop working after many years of nonuse. Either way, I went thru the trouble of removing the door cards on all 4 doors and removed the old actuators, after testing and realizing they didn't work I replaced them with aftermarket actuators at a cost of $3.50 each and they work just fine. If you have an actuator problem I strongly advise not buying used original Jag actuators, I made that mistake along with buying used Door Locking Control modules and etc. In addition, I believe my key barrels were damaged due to the previous owner turning the keys with too much force trying to lock or unlock the doors, not knowing that the actuators were the problem, so I purchased a "key barrel repair kit" and rebuilt the key barrels as well. If anyone want additional info regarding these issues, feel free to respond with your questions. I can even tell you how to hook up the 5-wire front door lock actuators, the key barrel repairs will take a lot more stick-to-it-ness if you have the moxie to do it, its a lot more work pulling out the door handles, breaking down the barrels and putting them back together with the new innards, but it can be done. Now I'm on to my next and final issue, the dreaded "front suspension". However, that will have to wait until next Spring, my wife wants me to tend to her car.
Absolutely, I have bought about 3 or 4 "used" Jag original actuators and none of them worked. I even bought 2 used doorlocking modules, swapped them out, only to find out that it wasn't the problem. It was just inconceivable that all 4 of my actuators were shot, but they were. So I replaced them with the aftermarket actuators, they fit well and work just fine, only $3.50 each. I will know soon enough if they hold up, but right now they are doing the job.
