Default My VDP Rear Shocks are shot

I did a search at Napa, Autozone and OReillys.

Napa: has nothing

Autozone: SenSen $43 each (Part Number: 32140031 )

Oreillys: KYB $97 each (Part #:KG9309)

Trying to keep this to a lowest cost. Not too concerned on how long they last. Would like a decent ride. Any other options out there? Also, haven't verified self leveling but not concerned in keeping that if it does have it.

Much Thanks for your input.

What's your Vin number? Early and late cars have different suspension setups in the rear.

You could check out rockauto and see what they have too.

You don't have to post the whole VIN, just the last 6 numbers.

Put those in your signature file and any advice you are given will be far more applicable to your car than for instance, the model year ....
(however no harm in adding that to your sig either ),
see my sig file below for an example.

Not really sure what depicts a late or early XJ6. What year is yours? Did they come with bushings?

Rockauto calls the rear shocks "struts" - they show KYB's for your 92 ...

My pal Jim, "manwich66" fitted these and likes them ..I've ridden in that car and they were just fine.

Ah yes, I see them now. Looks like you also need to purchase a $50 kit as well. Pretty much brings them up to $80 per rear shock and I still don't see that they include the bushings.

Late cars have totally different rear suspension components, the late suspension is really the X300 layout.

The changeover starts at VIN 696460 - you can check all the XJ40 part variants based on VIN at this site:

They will have the main bushings AFAIK but I don't think you'll get the cowboy hat one (the one that's usually crumbled) CBC2933 but a google of that part number will bring up some other suppliers.

You only need the convert kit if you still have the self-levelling in place ..on most cars it's been converted already by now but maybe yours hasn't?

I think what you end up buying depends on whether you still have the self-leveling setup or not.

edit: Looks like those KYB's are bare bones; you'll need shrouds and bushings as well if you go with the KYBs

If it's any consolation, IIRC I paid almost $300 for the rear Bilstiens on my rig

Locally at my Auto parts store is pretty inexpensive. Do these fit the early models?

Yes, saw those on Oreillys as well. Bushings included, less the hat one.

They fit all models with pre-X300 shocks and even late models that use the original shock absorber bushing/hat style mount. The later version of shock/bushing arrangement does away with these but that only applies to the X300 suspensions with the cast wishbones AFAIK.

The shock absorber that fits your car has a collar mounted on the lower body that the spring rests upon. Even though the KYB illustration doesn't show the bushings, washers and shrouds, it does show that collar very clearly.

I have no experience with pre-X300 style suspensions as in the later style the spring rests on the control arm, not on the shock absorber body.

Be very careful selecting your shock absorbers ...best plan is to go to that jaguar parts site I linked to earlier in the thread, then going by your vin, select the shock and get the part number.
Then search for it or its equivalent, whether it be KYB, Monroe, Sachs, Bilstein or whatever. Most will come with the bushings (less the one you get from o'reillys) but some, as we have seen (KYB) will not.

If you have to get upper and lower bushings (in addition to the hat bushings) again, go to the parts list and get the part numbers and search for them that way.

Good info guys. Looks like the budget way would be:

KYB KG9309 (2) $55.79 x 2

KYB KIT109 (1) $49.79

CBC2933 "Hat" (2) $6.29 x 2

Don't think that "kit" has the bushings you need in it - from what I can see, neither the shocks or the kit include the upper and lower isolators, CBC225455 & CBC225760 or the CBC2933 "Hat". All of these are needed to mount the top of the shock in the plate.

Also you'll only need the kit if you haven't converted from self-leveling - so I suppose you've checked your car and you still have the self-leveling system in place?

BTW, here's a complete kit for changeover from self-leveling to standard shocks with a photo of all the parts required:

Welsh Enterprises - New Jaguar Parts, Used Jaguar Parts and Accessories - XK120 - XK140 - XK150 - E-Type - MK - XJ6 - XJ8 - XJ - XK8 - XK - XJS - S-Type - X-Type - XF

So you should really check as to whether your car has already been converted or not!
