Name this mystery connection
Can anyone help me identify this item and what it's supposed to connect to? I have it located next to the pedal box on the firewall...there's a short hose connection that is not connected to anything....which leads me to believe it was cut or bypassed in some way?
Thanks,
Pete

Hey Pete,
I just went and took a look at my 1990 Sovereign parts car, and I don't see anything like that in the area of the pedal box.
Matter of fact, nothing in your pic looks anything like what I'm seeing on my car.
Maybe you could back off with your camera so I can get a better idea of the specific location.
regards,
Retro

I'm viewing your photo on my phone so I'm not positive, but that looks like the heater control valve which allows coolant to pass through the heater core in the center of the dash unless vacuum is applied to that small fitting via the Climate Control Unit.

Don, I think you're correct... (Retro I can try to post a more wide open photo), as it's tied into the cooling line going through the firewall.
Any idea what that vacuum line would tie into this actuator? I don't have any stray vacuum lines around that side of the engine compartment...guessing i'm looking for a hard black line that goes back in through the firewall...

Pete,
I think you're correct about it being a vacuum hose that passes through the firewall to the Climate Control Unit in the center dash area. Search the archives at the Jag-Lovers XJ40 forum because I think someone once posted a schematic of the climate control vacuum lines - or the schematic may be part of the XJ40 eBook there at Jag-Lovers.
Hopefully one of our early XJ40 experts will reply with the specific details about that hose.
Cheers,
Don

The heater control valves were used on the 1988/89, deleted for the 1990-1992MYs and installed on the 1993/94MYs.
The RED vacuum line is for the heater valve. There are 4 vacuum solenoids (2 on each side) mounted to the lower part of the climate control box above the gearbox tunnel for the 1988-1992 cars. The 1993/94 cars use a different vacuum solenoid 'block-type' assy rather than individual.
The 1990-1992 has the vacuum solenoid for the heater valve but the RED piping is missing (not installed).
The climate control box has 'flap-doors' that will close off the heater matrix but the A/C evaporator will be more efficient if the hot coolant does not circulate through the matrix.
A heater valve and vacuum line can be added/installed on the 1990-1992 cars.

(Then again, that feeling isn't all that unusual for me!)
Since I have a '90 model, I guess I'm no dimmer than usual....

I almost beat the Jaguar gurus with a helpful post, and now I see you answered it already heh. Maybe next time!
So, I did some more looking around and noticed a red see-through hose that went from a hole between the battery and the hood latch, and fed it's way along the back of the engine compartment firewall, over to the drivers side where the heater solenoid is. Surprise, it was disconnected and entagled in some of the wiring. It's frustrating when something that straightforward is in front of you, and even more frustrating when it's red..and the only red thing in the engine compartment! hah.
So, good news is, I have strong heat now... and on to figure out why the cooling flaps aren't working on the cooling side. Getting closer!
Thanks everyone!
