no crank on XJ40
hi,
can anyone help, just brought a 1989 xj sovereign 2.9 auto, it has no file history. it got a new battery, new starter motor, come to start it and everthing lights up but no crank. just a click.. tired to turn engine over by wrench but nothing moving. ive put some oil down the cylinders to free it up, or is there something i am missing?
thanks

Hi Osprey,
Did it sit for a long time without starting or running the engine?
Seems like your engine is blocked, maybe the piston rings are corroded to the piston liners due moisture or a head gasket failure.
Had a few engines in the past and I got them loose by spraying several times WD40 in the cilinders, this a few times a week. (Could take a while)
From underneath you can acces the flywheel and try to move the flywheel with a large cowbar but be careful with the bell housing of the gearbox!
Try clock wise and anti clock wise. If loose turn the engine manually over a few times before cranking.
