I haven't driven an XJ81 so I don't know what the extra weight does to the handling or ride, but the six-cylinder cars are not "soft." They have a ride that is comfortable and luxurious but also well-controlled and sporty, at least when the shocks and all the bushings and such are in good condition. Chances are that your shocks are tired but also some of the suspension bushings too.

Don, thanks. I think that the shocks may be hammered out. I'll order a pair of HD Bilstein's. They usually hold up well.
