Default Problems with 89 xj6

I've had my car for a couple years now, when I first got it it ran, had some minor problems with it, but ran. Over time we had battery issues, had to charge it every time to get it started. At the time I didn't have the time or money to mess with the car. Come to find out the battery was not the right size, purchased a new battery but it in, the only thing that is working in the car is some lights and windows/sunroof. Don't get any sound when you turn the key over or anything. Any suggestions will help. Thanks

Hi Cshaw59,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums!

I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble with your Jag. There are so many possible causes that your most expedient course may be to have the car inspected by a good independent automotive electrical specialist.

Just to give you an idea of things that could be involved, the electrical & electronic systems on these cars are sensitive to corrosion on battery power connections and ground points; relays fail (some of which are in multiple-relay modules); cold or starved solder joints in fuse boxes cause problems; the ignition switches are known to fail; when the "duckbill" drain under the windshield cowl clogs up with leaves and seeds, water can fill up the undercowl and spill into the passenger compartment along the firewall, where most of the car's electronic "brains" are located, including the Engine Control Module (ECM) and Central Processor Unit (CPU), and water damage to those components is known.

Two things you can do yourself:

1) Check the Vehicle Condition Monitor (VCM) for any stored trouble codes. Turn the key to Position II (ignition ON) but do not start the car. Press the VCM button on the trip computer to the right of the steering wheel, and watch the lower display in the instrument cluster for any message that may come up. If any message or code is displayed, report it here and we'll go from there.

2) Check all the fuses. There are three fuse boxes, one at the base of each A-pillar just ahead of the front doors, and one in the front of the compartement under the center console armrest lid. If you find a blown fuse, that may be a clue.

Without additional information, we can only guess at the cause of your issues.

Since we're a friendly group, please visit the https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/n...-intro-must-5/ and post an introduction so we can learn something about you and your Jaguar and give you a proper welcome.

Please keep us informed.

Cheers,

Don

As Don suggested, go through the entire vehicle and find every ground point and remove the grounds and clean everything thoroughly. This includes removing and cleaning all battery cable connections as well. If you search the forum, I know Don has an extensive write-up on locating all ground points. Also, pull and examine/clean every relay and relay socket. Report back if some of the issues have cleared after you have cleaned grounds and relays.

From the description, you may want to consider removing all door panels and examine/clean every connector. Remember, you have a 25 year old vehicle, it will need TLC once in a while.
