(This was moved from the Series 3 forum)....

Hi Robert....

This forum is for the XJ6 models that were primarily made from 68-87... The models made afterwards were known as the XJ40, even though they are badged as XJ6 (I know it's confusing)...
For a quicker response, you may need to post your question in the XJ40 forum...

There is also another site that is quite helpfull, Jag-lovers - the Jaguar Enthusiasts' premier Internet site ... There is an archived list of all the posts there, so a simple search may be all you need to do...

Good luck with your car...

Robert,

It could either be an aftermarket security system or more than likely the stereo security beeping at you. The Stereo has an inbuilt anti theft device that activates whenever the battery is disconnected. To reset the stereo, you will need to enter the correct code which was supplied on a card in the vehicles manual. You mention though that you don't have any books so that info is probably not much use to you.

Have a check under the hood, some owners had the code engraved underneath somewhere...the other option is to contact a Jag dealer with the VIN to obtain the code...or replace the stereo with an aftermarket one.

I can't offer any more help than this although the are a few threads on this subject in the Forum which may be worth searching for and might help.

Hope you get it sorted

It beeps because it wants you to do something, but you say you don't have a key fob.

It should stop when you insert the key and start the car, but will rebegin when you stop the car.

Key out of the ignition.

Unfasten the overhead console and remove the connector from the thing that looks like a radar dome. Reconnect.

You should hear a different beep set and then nothing. It has come out of reset mode.

You might have to do this a few times. There's a bit of a knack to getting it right.

Works for me, my key fobs are bust so have to always use the key in the doors.

System is apparently still armed against theft.

Until you obtain a correct fob with matching receiver (radar dome) you will have to do this after every battery disconnect or flat battery.

The SLCM needs an input of 5 signals from a keyfob transmitter. You can programme 5 individual or just one, but a total of 5 presses of buttons are needed to silence the system. The 1990 to 1992 XJ40 system requires the reprogramming each time the battery is disconnected.
The 1988-89 XJ40 used an Infrared system and the 1993-94 was an improved system and retained the programming

I hate to revive an old thread, but this is my problem. 1990 XJ40 Base. When we bought it, everything worked. Battery went dead and so on. Now the side markers and security horn won't stop blinking and sounding. I found a wire hooked into the RH fuse block in C4, dimmer & aux side light relay, 3 amp. The PO had put a 25 amp fuse in this spot with the mystery wire going to the security on/off switch in the center console. I removed said 25 amp fuse & wire and replaced with 3 amp. fuse. Side marker lights and security horn continue to flash/sound. No literature speaks of the security on these cars. Without the said 3 amp fuse, my tail lights and license plate lights won't work since they are on the same circuit. Transmitter busted, so no FOB. VIN# 618679. What does my security system want from me? Must I get a new transmitter? Can I remove security altogether? Thanks.

Oh yeah, security switch does nothing. I looked in the overhead light spot and there was no dome. There is a connector with nothing attached. Just 2 big lights and 1 small light.

Got a battery for my busted security FOB and "viola", problem solved. No more flashing side markers, no more beeping security horn. FOB does everything it is supposed to do. Hope this helps other members. Cheers.

Does this apply to an 1988 XJ6?
