Default Some fun drag racing

So I actually got into some real stop light racing yesterday. I was in the suburbs, on a 4 lane road with a middle lane, and there was a stop light about every 3/4 of a mile. I was going about 6 miles down this street, at in the very first mile I get stopped next to a Chevy Cobalt SS, with some 20 something yesar old and his girl in the car. I thought it would be fun, but I knew I would lose, to race this guy. So I put it in manual ovredrive and sport, and gave the guy the lets race look, and floored it and I beat his ***. I got up to 70, in a 45 zone, so I started breaking, and I was like 4 lenths ahead of him by then. Then he flies by me at like 95, acting like that means something, but I could tell at those speed his supercharger woulda beat my acceleration.

So then I met him at the next light, we did it again, and I won again...and we did it two more times. All 3 of those times I was like 3 or fou car lenghts ahead at 80 mph. Then on the last time we went at it, we started out neck and neck, but I forgot to shift into 3rd gear and my engine only revs up to 4000, so that screwed me over. He gives me a thumbs down, as if I didn't win 4 out of 5. It was so much fun tho.

Beat in mind this cobalt is brand new, big *** spoiler, supercharged, 205 horsepower manual tranny, and the car weighs less then 3000 pounds. My car weighs just under 4000, and supposedly had 230 horsepower new. I don't know how I won these, cuz he is supposed to do 0-60 in 6.4 compared to my 7.7, but I guess I was lucky.

All and all it was a fun day, and I got new flavor bars for my grill at Abt.

Nice!

Drivers win races 9 out of 10 times! He was probably dumping the clutch and getting no traction...the SC on those things with the short 1st gear is getting boost right away. Love the fact he gave you thumbs down....I'm sure his gf was laughing on the inside the whole time!

IDk what he was doing wrong. It sounded like he was making good shifts, cuz I could hear his engine and it was shifting at a loud rpms. I was sure I was going to lose, i was just messing around, so when I won I flipped out.

Geez, I never figured my 93 XJ as a racing car.... As it is I drive the friggin thing like it's full of eggs. I'd be scared to put my foot in it, cuase sure as %&* something would break costing me nothing but grief and lots of money. Rather be driving a go fast car like our NOS assisted 06 Mustang and go cobalt hunting, though it would hardly seem sporting. And the ricers and such seem to instinctively shy away from the ol pony.

I take it pretty easy on the car, that's the first time I ever drag raced someone for real.

But it seems pretty well thought that the xj40 engines are built to last and bulletproof basically, that's what I hear everyone say. It's the last part of the car I worry about breaking.

Yeah, I always wonder when people suggest changing the ol six banger. Seems as soon as you mention you've got a Jag to a 'car guy' they say you can drop a ford or chevy small block v8 right in. The likely costs, headaches, resdesign, and exra work aside, I think the engine is what makes the Jag a Jag. And as you say it is reputed to be very strong and long lived, why mess with success. Something about popping the hood and seeingthat gorgeous Jaguarmotor in the engine bay!! I highly doubt thatan american V8 would run as smoothly or as strong.

The XJ40 six cylinder is a solid engine. Runs strong and doesn't leak oil. The six and twelve cylinder engines prior lacked power off the line and if they didn't leak it meant you were out of oil. They were built to run at speed and not light to light.

I love the look of the V12, but don't I recall a spontanious combustion issue??? I remember seeing a lot with fuel leaks and they caught fire with alarming regularity. Any how I've beenthinking the ol 12 would be really cool in sat a WWII spitfire replica, Imagine it with those short stacks idling...Hmmm. Sweet!

They are, but only at speed. It's amazing to watch them at 90 mph, squat down and ZOOM! You're over 120!!!
