Default Is a sovereign 1990 6 cyl and a 1988 xj6 compatible

I had seen a jaguar sovereign 1990 6 cyl for sale on Craigslist for $800. Would this be a good buy for parts for my 1988 xj40. Are they even compatible. Thanks

Hi Wewillbefree,

If I haven't already said so, Welcome to the Jaguar Forums!

There are numerous parts that should interchange just fine. There are also significant differences between 1988 and 1990 XJ40s. A good place to compare parts between the two years (by VIN breakout) is jaguarclassicparts.com, or better yet, download the Jaguar Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) from this forum and install it on your computer so you can view parts diagrams even when you're not online.

A few differences I can think of off the top of my head ('88 listed first):

Engine: 3.6L vs. 4.0L

Transmission: The '88 will have the ZF 4HP22 hydro-mechanical gearbox; the '90 will have the ZF 4HP24 electronically-controlled gearbox. I don't think it would be easy or possible to use the later gearbox in the '88 due to the electronics involved.

Differential: The diffential ratios are probably different, and if your '88 is an early car, it may have a U-joint junction to the driveshaft, but later cars have a flexible coupling (a.k.a. flex disc, Jurid, Giubo).

Steering Rack: Your '88 may have an Adwest but the '90 probably has a ZF. The ZF may retrofit in the '88, but I don't know for sure.

Instrument Cluster: Vacuum Fluorescent Display instrument cluster vs. Analog. The Analog can be retrofitted but it requires extensive re-wiring (there's a thread on this topic here in the XJ40 forum).

Brakes: Girling vs. Teves (incompatible systems)

Interior: I believe the seat design and possibly the seat mounting arrangement is different.

Electrical Connectors: Some components are similar, but their connectors are different.

Radio/Cassette Player: The '90 unit may fit in the same space as the '88, but I think the electrical connectors are different.

Rear Suspension: Your '88 may have the rear Self-Leveling Suspension (SLS), while the '90 may not. Whether the '90 parts could be used in converting your '88 to non-SLS I don't know.

Battery: I think the battery was moved from the engine compartment to the trunk beginning with the 1990 MY and the introduction of the 4.0L engine. I don't know to what extent that may affect the compatibility of some wiring harnesses, but it might.

Fluid reservoirs: I believe the coolant and power steering fluid reservoirs are different.

Radiator cooling fans: The '88 will have a viscous-coupled fan; the '90 may have an electric fan.

I think most body panels should be compatible, and much of the suspension. Possibly many of the interior trim pieces, although the design of the interior door trim panels may differ. The grill, headlamps, bumpers, etc. should interchange.

I hope this is helpful. I'm sure some of our other members will have some additional thoughts or corrections.

Cheers,

Don

I've been told that Coast Imports on Mitchell Island is the wrecking yard that handles a lot of Jags in Vancouver. Maybe they have some '88 parts?

good luck

Larry
