I'm looking at a 93 xj6 for the sons first car The car looks great and the price is right, I havent driven the car yet but these forums have been helpful on my 2 audis i thought i should chime in to get the feedback. the xj6 is the 6 cylinder Automatic with 120000 for $1500.00 I do all my own maintenance and can handle about anything a car can through at me. just would like to know of any issues to look for. Thanks for any help.
I have moed off your thread so that you get more responses . I do have an XJ40 too. Being '93 model year you get more goodies .
So far let's see what we had to change :
A/C was a nightmare but I believe it will no longer be an issue as it was fixed
Two fans replaced due to buzzing sound
O'ring replaced due to little leak
Crank bearing replaced due to squeaky belt sound but WD40 handled that problem too
I think you would not be crossed at yourself should you go for it providing that Jaguar was maintained well

Thanks for the replies i dont know anything about jags but If i purchase this car i will get more involved in this forum im sure one question would be timing belts does the 6 cylinder have a timing belt, this would be 1 issue i would have to deal with soon, most of these engines are interferance type. It looks easier than doing my audis at least you dont have to disasemble the front end.
XJ6's are beautiful cars and as long as you are buying a well maintained car, and are mechanically inclined I would say they are a good purchase.
I miss mine but am also glad that I got rid of it since mine was becoming too expensive to fix. If you are buying one for $1500 you really have to make sure that it is good mechanically. I sold mine which was in pretty good condition this past week for $2400 CAD and the head gasket went two days later. What I'm trying to say is, expect stuff to break time to time but not necessarily something that is as expensive as a head gasket.

My opinion of 90-94 xj6's, is i would donate them to charity if 1 was given to me and i work on them for a living.
96-97 best 90 model years. 98-2000 xj8 ok if engine has been replaced. You asked...

If he spends 1500 on the car and gets 25-50k miles out of it with no real issues then I would say the investment was paid for. Remember it is a first car, most people don't want to unleash their kid on the road with a flashy, newer, more expencive car untill they have proven themselves. When the kid gets in a wreck you wont be out a bunch of money because you bought the car for nothing.
