Default Trunk leak when opened?

I'm revisiting an old favorite today...

I'm still battling my saga with the leaky rear trunk lid on my '89... but what I'm noticing right now is that it stays fairly dry overall, but when I open my trunk lid, water starts pouring out from around the lock area. It's strange, as I see water flowing past the clear license plate lenses and such...so it takes about 10 seconds for the water to get from wherever it is, through all of this stuff to actually pour down from the latch opening to whatever i'm packing into the trunk.

Where does water typically collect? A long while back I could have sworn I read something about drilling holes for drainage someplace, but I'm not seeing that. I've had pretty much everything off except the rear chrome/trunk lock mech and trim, so i can't exactly see where this water is getting trapped...

Pete,

I would venture to guess the gasket behind the lock finish piece is cracked, or not seated properly. I've heard of the drilling to, but I beleive it's in regards to the black finish piece that runs in-between the tail light assemblies. Water collects and drips down to the area below that, and people have drilled additional weep holes there for drainage and air circulation.
