Turbocharging a 3.6 Liter?
I've been kicking the idea of possibly turbocharging the 3.6L in my '88 VDP and was looking for some opinions. Since the 3.6 was a bit sluggish compared to the later 4.0L , I thought adding some boost might help even things out a bit. The compression ratio is 8.5:1 so that's a prime candidate. I'd be looking to mount a small front mounted intercooler behind the grill. Also upgrading the fuel pump and injectors and possibly an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. My concern is this...... will the engine management system be able to cope with the added boost? I'm only planning on adding about 7-8 psi of boost. What are some concerns to look out for? Do you think it's too much boost for the stock system to handle?
There are 2 different compression ratios for the 3.6 engine.
The 3.6 XJ40 VIN will have a 5 or 6 for the compression ratio. The (earlier 1988) 5 will have the lower ratio.
That might be more conducive for forced induction.
The 4.0 (90MY onward) will have a 7 for the standard compression ratio.
