Default VCM and Trip Computer not working

Hello,

My 1988 XJ40 has the earlier digital dash with the square VCM screen and trip computer display. NONE OF IT WORKS. The cruise control, which is attached to the same module, does work, however. It looks like someone was previously looking around with this issue, as a screw which is definitely NOT factory is holding it in. The buttons that say "fuel" and "time" don't do anything. Finally, the switch to change between the kph and mph does not work; it only shows kph but not mph. Anyone have any advice for me? I hear it breaks a lot. Thanks in advance!!

Will

Hi Will,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us!

A very common issue with the vacuum fluoroescent instrument clusters used on the '87-'89 XJ40s is poor solder joints on the circuit boards inside the cluster.

There are four electrical connectors on the back of the instrument cluster, one of which connects to the trip computer. It is possible this connector has come loose or needs to be cleaned. Removing the instrument cluster is easy. See photos and descriptions at the link to photo albums in my signature (sorry the large images are down but the thumbnails and descriptions are still up).

You can download the Electrical Guide here:

Jaguar XJ40 Electrical Guide 1987-1989

Cheers,

Don
