Question What is the best engine oil to use?..

Good Day,

I'm back again. The manual says; 5w/50, 10w/30 thru w/50, 15w/40 -w/50 and 20w/40 - w/50. My questions; What was the "OEM" oil used for 1992 XJ6's? What is the recommended high mileage oil to use today? I only use full synthetic oil in my vehicles but this being "The Jag" I want to get the weight correct.

My thoughts are, due to my present climate (here in Wyoming) to run 10w/40. However, if anyone has experience with 5w, 15w, 20w PLEASE INFORM ME.

Again, any help is appreciated. Happy Holidays to all.

I once had my oil changed at the local-ish Jaguar Dealership, and I believe they used 20w40. Otherwise, the other mechanics who have changed the oil, including a Jaguar specialist, all use 10W30 - and our climate can be pretty severe as well. Apart from preferring Castrol brand according to the handbook, a viscosity requirement is not provided.

You should look for an old handbook for your '92 on Ebay. It would help with some of these kinds of questions. Otherwise, Haynes manual is a good tool. If you've got more money to play with, there is also always the shop manual CDs from JDHT.

Cheers!
Scott

Default Engine Oil

Seems like there is alot of debate about which weight oil to use. I decided to go with the 20w50. I would get the occasional puff of blue smoke when starting the car and since using the 20w50 the smoke issue rarely happens. If I drove the car in the winter one of the lighter weights would be better but for the summer the heavier oil works fine. Cary

'Which oil is best' is one of those questions where the answers will invariably be so varied and contradictory it's hardly worth the effort of asking. Frequently the discussion becomes quite heated and it all ends in tears.

I'll go out on a limb and suggest that there's not enough field data to suggest that any one of the oils on the list prepared by Jaguar is any better than the other. Use the viscosity appropriate for your climate and whatever type or brand you personally like the most.

Thanks for getting back to me. I've done a bit of research and found, to my understanding, that a 5w would be best- due to the easier/faster lubrication/protection.

(I have no information on the past mechanical history of the car other than it has been "NEGLECTED".)

Now I just need to find the proper top end/high temp protection. The Haynes manual says something completely different than the owners manual- on almost all fluid requirements.

Again, thank you very much!

To Neo Cat.(12-11-12)

Sorry a bit late but your remarks viz-a-viz " best oil" and using 20-50 is correct for hot climates. Although I have XJ40 My1991, we are in Aus where the summer temps are between 70' Far and 110' Far ( 22'C to 40'C) and these can be between 2 to 7 days in duration.

Although we are not told, the viscosity of the thinner oils does not last under such heat stress. Our 91 has never run better on hot days and retains good oil pressure even with A/C on & elect fans running.

Also, the car manual will prove your are correct for that high temp range. Well done.

I use Castrol 10w60 fully synthetic or Penrite HPR 10 10w60 in all our classic cars ....minimal oil consumption between changes, no smoke and they all run beautifully.....

i,ve been using Castrol 20w50 in my cars (5 jags) ever since i got them and never had any problems . i use Havoline in the others. best way to check oil is to put a few drops on your finger and rub back and forth to see how long it lasts. checking for parfin base . not oil

20w 50 is what you should use for v8 Jaguars! Dont use full synthetic, it burns faster that normal. And yes folks, Jaguar engines do burn about a quart of oil every 1000 miles. Its not because you have a leak or your piston rings are worn. Its a Jag thing! Lol. Trust me ive owned my 1998 and 2002 Jaguar XJRs for the past 10 yrs now. Thicker oil is best for these cars. Check and keep all the fluid levels up and ull be just fine!

Glad I don’t own your Jag I expect my 1965 ‘S’ to burn that sort of oil in a 1000mls but certainly would be investigating if my 1999XJR did that. Also the XJ40 is not a V8 its the AJ6 engine and maybe 2 pints/litres between oil changes would have been my experience over 14 years of driving the one I had.

Its normal for cars to burn at least half to a full court every 1000 miles especially high mileage. Every Jaguar that I have seen, heard or even owned did that. I have no leaks either or combustion/piston issues. Every Jag specialist will tell you the same thing I told you. My Jags are just fine, runs better than most XJRs out there. 20w 50 is the way to go.

Hi tacromike,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums!

You have posted to a thread that had had no activity since 2013. You can see the date of the last post right above the poster's name. Also, this thread is in the forum for the XJ40, which is the XJ6 inline 6-cylinder model offered from 1987-1994. Jaguar recommended 20W-50 oil in the XJ40 for most climates.

However, so far as I am aware, for the AJ26 and AJ27 V8 engines used in the X308s like your 1998 and 2002, Jaguar recommended 5W-30 for most climates, and the heaviest oil recommended was 5W-40. Using an oil with higher viscosity than recommended can result in poor lubrication before the oil warms up and accelerated wear of internal engine components, not to mention the engine will face increased internal resistance and burn more fuel. We second-guess the engine designers at our peril.

Here's the page from the X308 Vehicle Care Handbook, which was essentially unchanged from 1998-2003:

Thanks for the advice! I am new to the thread lol. So instead of 20w-50, I should use 5w-40? How much of a difference does that make? I have 120,000 miles. My Jaguar Mechanic says for my year of model i should use 20w-50....idk anymore, I keep hearing different things...

Perhaps Jaguar know a little bit more than your mechanic? Go with what has been posted regarding your local temperatures.

Found the culprit! Pcv valve was clogged. Apparently it hasnt been changed once since 1999 😬😬. Haha. No more burning oil tho :-) I knew it wasnt the piston rings or anything major. We good. But yea im take your advice about the oil for sure. Thansk man!

Thanks for posting the chart. Exactly what I needed to see. In sunny SoCal averaging 70 degrees, so 0/40 for me. Walmart has them for under $20 for Castrol 5qt Jugs.

That's the chart for a different engine - use 20-50 in your XJ40!

MPDano,

Larry is correct. That chart was for an X308 with the AJ26 or AJ27 engine. For your XJ40 with AJ6 engine you want to use 20W-50 conventional oil, not synthetic. Castrol GTX, Quaker State High Mileage, and Pennzoil are all good brands still available in the U.S.

Cheers,

Don
