Default XJ40 oil pressure problems

My xj40's oil pressure goes into the red on tickover once its warmed up and has been running for approx 15 mins, the engine is still very quiet and smooth despite the low pressure. When driving along the pressure goes up to and past the halfway mark on the gauge. The car has covered 170k miles and has full service history (mostly jaguar), i have changed the oil and filter and nothing has changed.

Any ideas, could it be worn bearings, oil pump or could it be a faulty sender?

Any info greatfully received

Dan

20/50 oil for that engine, and a new sender.

Does anyone know if an oil sender off a 3.2 is the same as the 4.0 as a friend has a spare one. Ive called a jaguar dealer and all they say is that they look the same but will not tell me part numbers etc.

The two parts are the same - Jaguar list JLM20791 as "oil pressure switch and link lead" for both the 3.2 and the 4.0 litre engines. This is the later X300 part and will register the level at the middle of the dial to display that there is oil pressure in the engine - it will not display the actual oil pressure measurement like the original part.

Jaguar XJ40 part numbers are available on the JDHT website -

http://www.jaguarclassicparts.com/html/JCPHomePage.html

Unfortunately it is not an easy website to use.

Hope this helps,

David
