John,
I've moved this thread from the Intro forum to XJ6 & XJ12 Series I, II & III forum.
The full VIN should have SAJ (the World manufacturer code for Jaguar) before the 14 digits you have listed making up a standard 17 digit VIN.
From there:
D = Daimler
D = Double Six
A = Base Spec
L = Body Type (4 door saloon)
W = Engine (other 5.3 variants)
3 = Transmission/Steering (Auto/RHD)
C = Model Year (1982)
C = Emission Control System
310220 = Production Serial Number
I'm not familiar with the V12 engine numbering system but members here or in XJS forum should be able to interpret the engine number for you.

The HE engine started with engine # 7P45001## in the Sedan vehicles.
8S18001## was the start of the HE in the XJ-S.
Yours would be a later PreHE.
The "S" is for "Standard Comp" in this case 9:1.
"B" is for the designated piston grade fitted. There are A and B pistons, and that is purely the size by what I remember as 0.005", which was to allow for manufacturing blunders with the liners, so rather than throw away a batch, they were honed to a "slightly" larger diameter, and pistons cam ground to suit. NO increase in capacity/power/etc resulted from this. That would be wishful thinking.
My HE was an SB, so 12.5:1, and B grade pistons.

Thank You Grant, I have always used unleaded in her since leaded went out here in Australia,but I have had to mess around with the additives to replace the lead not knowing I could use premium Unleaded, Regards J.

Messing with snake oil, waste of time and money.
The Jag was Unleaded engine from the factory.
The Aussie mobs, no names obviously, made an absolute fortune from those additives. Engines with "cast iron" cylinder heads need something to replace the "lead", but alloy heads no need.
