Default 1982 XJ6 New Owner and Preservationist.

Just closed the deal on a very clean 1982 XJ6. 105,000 miles. Red on tan leather. The car originally came out of Connecticut and from the shape of the body has probably never seen a New England Winter. The floorboards are solid and carpets dry, rockers show no rust, the trunk is spotless, wheel arches are rust free, etc... The only rust on the car, and this will be taken care of, is the typical bubbling around the front windscreen. On the test drive the car accelerated strong, shifted well, went down the road straight and true even at 75MPH. Braked straight and otherwise seemed to be a car that the seller took good care of.

I will document the car as that is part of the joy of ownership for me. My other Jag is a 1994 XJS 6.0 V12 convertible, so this one is in good company.

THE GOOD:
Car just passed New Hampshire safety inspection this month (September 2022)
New Exhaust
New front brakes pads and hoses, the rears have yet to be determined.
500 miles on new tires
All the gauges, lights, horn, wipers, radio, etc work
Both tanks transfer and the gauge reads correctly
All glass is original Triplex, even the windshield
Clock works
Leather is in decent shape. The rear seat is perfect with the fronts probably needing to be reupholstered down the road
Crack free dash
For a Jag it is pretty dry underneath
All original manuals
Complete original tool kit
Original Pirelli 1982 date coded spare
Came with 6 extra wheels. The best 4 will get powder coated and restored

WHAT SHE NEEDS
Plugs and wires. Already ordered the Pertronix distributor and coil after reading rave reviews
Sunroof was previously opened, but closed slowly so the seller never opened it again
All fluids refreshed as a new baseline
Cam cover gaskets replaced
Glovebox latch needs adjusting as it wouldn't stay closed
Wood on glovebox is cracked
Needs a new headliner
Rear driver's door needs a new window regulator
AC not working
Will assess the cooling system. If needed a radiator flush or removal and professionally cleaned, new fan, belts, hoses, water pump, etc.

It's a cup holder and will probably be removed.

yeahh, Not a good place for any liquid. In my 1984, no drinks, no food, no smoking. But that is just me.

Really sharp color combo, I think that's the first red over tan I've seen. Subscribing for your updates!

Yes it does look good! What colour is that? (code on driver door). Might be a respray as no coach lines present (er, did they have them in '82?).

Agreed on the no food or drinking. I am also a Mercedes guy and they too don't have any cup holders for a reason.

I do like the red and tan. I previously owned a 1995 in Flaminco red and I have to say that I like this red much better. Was this not a common color?

I have come across a mod that is now a must have, that I probably would never have thought about until stumbling across a YouTube video. The mod is adding the 7" outboard Euro headlights.

The car has been resprayed, but is was done in the original color. VIN is SAJAV134XCC332798 if that tells you anything. I will not be at the car until Sunday, so no way of checking the door sticker until then.

More history on the car. The seller informed me that he had a head bolt fail and ended up replacing the block with a "low mileage" one. No receipts, but I did see the broken bolt. I called the garage where he had the work done, Upton Foreign Motors in Upton, MA and the owner of the shop confirmed that they replaced the block with one out of a 1987 XJ6 that had only 73,000 miles. He confirmed the bore had no scoring and the rings were not seized in the pistons.

I also learned that the front brakes were re-done and the rears inspected and were not leaking.

I know wheel choice is very much a personal taste thing, but I don't dislike the Kent style wheels. More so when they are new and the lips polished/cut.

I actually know this vehicle from when it was for sale in Connecticut - and have several photos of it when I went to visit and drive it. I don't know if you're able to message me directly and I can send you the photos/info that way.

How much did it close for? Ive been seeing Series 3 cars climbing in value here in Cali.
Get rid of those ugly door guards, and Im sure the value will increase

Asking price on FB Marketplace by the seller was $4,200.00. I offered $3,800.00 and we eventually settled on $4,000.00 even. I felt that was a fair price given the overall condition of the car. Yes, it will eventually need another proper windows out repaint, but the floors, rockers, trunk, etc have no rust. The carpets are perfect, all OEM glass present, all gauges work, even the two tanks transfer as they should. The leather is good for the time being, but that too will be replaced in the future.

After work the car received new NGK plugs and a new cap and rotor. All the old plugs looked like each cylinder was firing as they should. The only issue was the insulator at the tip of the #6 plug was broken. I wonder if it broke off once installed? The new plugs/cap/rotor also got rid of either a misfire of lumpy idle I have read a lot about. Pertronix distributor and coil are sitting on the shelf and will be the next install.

Plugs are a little worn.
Nice color though.

Great car!!!
I have to replace my plugs too. I was under the impression that the XK 4.2L prefers Champion spark plugs.

All of my research recommended Champion or NGK. I read where some didn't care for the Champions and I have had great luck with NGKs in my older Mercedes, so that is what I went with.

Nice car, unusual colours.

Why swap to Pertronics, it already has electronic?

I have read with the Pertronics distributor and higher voltage coil that these motors run a bit smoother.

Did Jaguar not make a lot of cars in red?
Paint code is CDG Damson Red
Trim Code is ADE Biscuit.

My other car is a 1994 XJS V12 convertible and it is funny how some cars look better in a certain color. I looked at an XJS in black and didn't care for it as much. I feet on the XJS lighter colors compliment the car better, but the red on the XJ6 is sharp.
