Default 1986 xj6 sovereign transmission repair

Hi again! My xj6 has had a transmission fluid leak for a couple weeks now, went to top it up yesterday and saw everything I had put in it on the ground at my feet. Just wondering if anyone could give me a ball park on what I’m paying to get this fixed. Looks like the rear main seal.

has the car been sitting without use?

the seals shrink and the leaks start.

if you drive it a while, the problem might correct itself.

I have used the car regularly since February, I was hoping this was the case but the leak only seems to get worse with use. Like I said, at this point it won’t even hold fluid

got it.

then the only solution is to replace the rear seal which I have been told can be done with the transmission in situ, but don't take that as the last word.

cost depends on the mechanic familiar with the BW66 transmission.

There is also a seal at the front that I remember replacing on my 1980 XJ6 around 1990. They are not difficult to replace once you can get to the seal, but obviously the front seal needs removal of the transmission. Rear seal will need removal of propshaft, (obviously), then the drive coupling. Probably OK to do in situ, but not nice if you can't get the car on a lift.
