Fuel tanks on series 1
Hi all.
Awesome site here, very informative.
We have a 1972 series 1 XJ6 which has been sitting in a shed for many years.
We have been slowly restoring it to its former glory, but have a problem with the fuel tanks. One has a hole and the other is full of sludge.
Now, my question is......I am going to replace both tanks, so do I have to get series 1 tanks, or do series 2 and 3 tanks fit.
Thanks

SII/SIII tanks fit into Series 1 XJ's. But the fuel sender on the early cars
are reached through the fender well cover.
SIII tanks, the only new ones I know of that are available, Spectra from
Canada, have their senders in the rear - through the tail light hole. So
the wires to the sender(s) need to be re routed and lengthened. Plus
the size of the line(s) are different and will need to be adapted and
the return line(s) plugged. (If you have a fuel injected engine in yours, you
will have the required return source).
Be sure to use new filler cap gaskets and the other gaskets as well. New
fuel senders should come with their own gaskets. Be careful as the fuel
senders are "handed" = there is a LH and RH one due to the floats.
I put SII tanks in my '72 for the conversion to fuel injection. The were
early tanks that still had the rear senders. But, they were "take outs".
I have a near new Series LH tank that I have listed on some sites...I have
the box to ship in - email me privately. At least one side would be easier... It does
not have a sender and you will probably need one or at least a new
brass float (they are available - same as Ford F150's of 80's vintage).

New Series 1 tanks are available from Spectra. As Roger says, the overall shape of the tank is same series 1,2,3, but fittings and sender locations vary. Easiest replacement would be to go with new Series 1 tanks.

More info here. Spectra JA1E and JA1F are the direct fit parts for Series 1.
