Default 1987 XJ6 Rust Prone Areas

I'm looking at a 1987 XJ6 and would like to know where the common rust prone places are from anyone familiar with these cars.

I'm in Hawaii so we obviously don't have road salt problems but the high humidity certainly does a number on cars.

The lower corners of the front windscreen are notorious for rust....same for the rear windscreen but not quite as common

Beyond that pretty much like any other car....rocker panels, lower area of fenders, etc.

Cheers

Thanks Doug. I recently got a '99 XJ8 and it had bad rust there but it was hidden until I took off the long plastic panel in front of the windshield.

In an '87 XJ6 would the rust areas you mention be visible without removing anything?

thanks

Update: I looked at the car today and turned it down because it would have been a project, not quite the Great Pyramids, but too close for me.

It had lots of rust under the corners of front and rear windshields and at the bottoms of the doors as predicted by Doug

Also, the wood was toast, the shifter console plastic was wrecked, as was the turn signal box (looked like garbage quality), the wipers didn't work, the ac didn't work, no speedo... you get the picture.

The headliner and visors were in near perfect condition whereas they are in bad shape on my 56Kmi 1999 XJ8.

I did think that the basic box was better than my '99 while the plastic stuff seemed similarly bad. The metal seemed stiffer. I was surprised that it had manual seats. I liked that it didn't have a glued on mirror that falls off. I liked that it was a simpler car, and I don't think it could sabotage me like the 1999 XJ8 could.

In the trunk there was a pump with tubing coming out of it... ? Air shocks?

Good that you walked away. It's much less expensive, and certainly easier, to buy a car in top shape than to take a poor example and bring it up to standard.

The old Ser I-II-III cars were absolutely built like tanks (with weight to match!). And, yes, Jaguar often skimped on the trim and small bits.

IMHO the Ser IIIs in particular are fantastic cars...."the most modern of all antique automobiles".

Sounds like the antenna drive motor.

The drive motor was remote from the antenna itself, using a cable to raise/lower the mast. A drain tube was provided in the event water trickled in via the cable. Quite an elaborate affair. Replacements were several hundred dollars back in the day.

Here's a link to an album I did years ago when I was taking apart an XJ6... Lots of areas for hidden dangers....
