As Steve advised in that thread, please post some info about yourself and your vehicle in New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum the New Member Area - Intro a MUST section. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice about posting to the forum.

If, after checking the fluid as Doug suggests, all is good but the car still will not move try this (kind of long and arduous to find it may not be the problem, but still cheaper than a trip to the tranny shop):
1) Take off the console padded arm rest
2) Remove the console inner box
3) Remove the window switch wiring, LABEL THEM AS YOU TAKE THEM OFF AND MARK WHICH WAY IS UP...you'll see...
4) Remove the top retaining screw holding the window switch face plate.
5) Grab the shift knob and unthread the two halves from each other
7) Take out the ashtrays
8) "jiggle" the window face plate and lift it out. This will remove the consol cover as well. If the cigar lighter is on the console, unplug it.
Raise the consol cover up over the shift lever. On my 87 SIII the shift lever position indicator stays in place.
9) Check to see if the cable to the shift lever is connected properly.
If not, with the lever in park, connect it. Start the car to check adjustement / adjust as necessary.
If it is connected, feel free to swear at your discretion, or simply say "CRAP" at the top of your lungs and put it all back together. It's still cheaper than a trip to the mechanic and you just learned a boat-load about your car.
While down in there, vacuum out all the junk that may have collected, clean and tighten every ground wire you see, replace the fuse for the seat and radio because that's where it's located, buried deep within the console, even if they work. Clean the contacts for the windows as well.

I'm thinking we need a "sticky topic" and/or different section names....or something.... to help clear up this model confusion.
I can throw something together....if you think the idea has merit

Retooling, yes, but Ser IIIs and XJ40s were manufactured simultaneously, causing confusion. And the XJ40 section heading has nothing to direct XJ6 owners there....so those unfamiliar with the term "XJ40" might not know it applies to them
Cheers
