Default 86 VDP XJ6 - Stubborn Fuel Pressure Regulator

Hello all.

I have an 86 XJ6 VDP running a little rough on stops, issuing small black particles from both exhaust. Recently changed fuel filter, air filter, coolant temp sensor. There is fuel in the vacuum lines from the fuel temp sensor and the Fuel Pressure Regulator. This has been said to be a sign of FPR diaphragm failure with replacement as the usual solution.

As luck has it, I have a spare Fuel pressure Regulator in my grage with nut and washer as well. Unluckily, after hours of wrestling and prying on the currently installed part, I was unable to remove the nut to remove the Fuel Pressure Regulator from the harness on which it is installed connected to the fuel rail. I was leaning and pulling to loosen it to such a degree that the entire fuel rail swayed with my efforts.

I strongly suspect this broken component is causing a dangerous fuel leak/presence in the engine bay and is thus cause for great concern. However, I am unable to get the defective part uninstalled. Has anyone else encountered this problem or have any recommendations as to how to get that nut loose?

Thanks
John Cook

as long as you havent stripped the nut or kinked the line that it connects to it should be easy. find the best fitting spanner you can, hold it tightly over the nut, making sure you are square to it and covering the maximum possible area then take a hammer and give the end of the spanner a few sharp blows. spraying some penetrating spray first will help. if it looks like its going to damage something stop. this should shock the nut free of any corrosion that is holding it in place.

i wouldn't recommend heat as the line obviously carries fuel, but some shock treatment with a hammer should loosen it, if its already stripped see if you can find one of the specialty spanners by 'Metrinch' to loosen it. they look weird but have got me out of a few sticky situations.

good luck,
regards jay
