86 XJ6 S3 4.2 AAV Location?
Hi, I’m chasing an issue where my car is idling very well in park and at 800 rpm the problem is when it goes into gear with the air conditioning on it starts to idle badly and pretty low RPMs would this be a cause from the AAV going bad what are the symptoms of a bad AAV can those affect idle? Is there any way to test it before a new one?
is there a way to adjust IN GEAR idle speed without adjusting park idle speed?
I have tried unplugging the AAV with engine running it doesn’t seem to have any affect

The AAV is bolted to the underside of the water rail. It's an odd looking thing. Part number EAC3883 in this illustration

The purpose of the AAV is to let more air into the engine to give a higher idle speed when cold. Often they are inoperative.
Warm idle speed is adjusted by turning the Idle Air Screw, part number EAC1737 in the illustration. Awkward to reach; you'll need an Allen key but I can't remember what size at the moment. Idle adjustment can't be adjusted for "in drive only".
Search the archives for "idle speed" and "air distribution block". Plenty of info and pics
For your particular problem I would begin by cleaning the throttle body and making sure the gap is set at .003". But....there are other possible faults.
Cheers
