Default 86 XJ6 Series 3 smog / cooling / chain slap

So, sure you've all been down this road, so any feedback appreciated.
1) having trouble with smog ( CA)
Changed dirty oil/ filter
New plugs.
Checked connections on cold start sensor. ( Stuck on, runs rich?)
Someone suggested throttle body cleaner for MAF box - intake and outtake?
2) Temp always 85 to 90, but now, never higher. Replaced sensor for aux fan. Will replace thermostat ( with new gaskets, yes ) this weekend. Anything else?
3) Will replace valve cover gaskets and adjust timing chain. ( Its a little confusing; some parts places only offer 2 gaskets..actually need 5, it seems, 2 more at rear , 1 in front and 20 copper washers - yes, you all know that, but..I didn't, and some [ bad ] parts places don't either?)
Ok, That's all. Please excuse the newbie.
Thanks.

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to XJ6 & XJ12 Series I, II & III forum. This is the place to post technical questions about your model.

hi,

do you mean it is not passing the smog testing?

are you driving the car for up to 1 hour BEFORE taking it to the testing station?

In the 1990s, my '84 didn't pass the test and I took it to the mechanic. He asked me how long did I drive it before having it tested. I told him I went straight to the station, about 20 minutes away.

he said that's the problem, you need to drive it for at least 1 hour so the engine goes thru its normal warming up cycles and stabilizes all systems.

I did and it passed.

Grossly failing, or almost passing?

Jose's advice is good, get her very thoroughly warmed up. It can make the difference if the test results are on the edge.

Changed dirty oil/ filter

Checked connections on cold start sensor. ( Stuck on, runs rich?)

The cold start system works only when the key is turned to 'start' so a problem there is not too likely.

If you're running rich (which will certainly cause a failed emissions test) here's some reading....

XJ6 Series - EFI Rich Mixture

Someone suggested throttle body cleaner for MAF box - intake and outtake?

Which might help if you had a "MAF" (mass air flow) sensor. But you don't. You have an air flow meter. Different animal.

On genreal principles is good to clean your throttle body from time to time, though. Not sure if this help you pass an emissions test, though.

2) Temp always 85 to 90, but now, never higher. Replaced sensor for aux fan. Will replace thermostat ( with new gaskets, yes ) this weekend. Anything else?
Ideally, for emissions purposes, you want 88-90ºC

3) Will replace valve cover gaskets and adjust timing chain. ( Its a little confusing; some parts places only offer 2 gaskets..actually need 5, it seems, 2 more at rear , 1 in front and 20 copper washers - yes, you all know that, but..I didn't, and some [ bad ] parts places don't either?)

Thanks.
Two cam cover gaskets and two 'half moon' seals are what you need for resealing the cam covers.

For adjusting the chain you'll probably need two breather cover gaskets, for either side of the breather screen. The originals will likely not be usable after all these years

Cheers

Thank you, Doug and Jose.
As to valve cover gaskets, my friend - xj6 guru - took over, and got me the six gaskets. 20 copper washers, and timing chain " stuff".
So, this weekend , I, under his command, will replace all that, as he insisted timing chain must be addressed, or very bad outcome possible.

Will read link on smog.

Again, thank you.

Hey. Thank you Jose and Doug.

My Jag guru set me straight on gaskets and copper washers; he ordered everything, including timing chain stuff. Will install - under his guidance- this weekend.

Also, thanks for smog advice. Read the link and will follow advice.

Als9, is there a link for VIN decoding for paint color?

Thank you.

ok, look under the hood / bonnet to see if there are labels there, one of them could have the paint code.
