You need to post on the XJ40 forum; there are experts on there for your car. Yes, Jaguar model naming can be confusing ! An XJ40 is totally different to the cars on this forum covering the XJ saloon from 1968-86 for six cylinder cars, and up to 1992 for the V12s

Actually being a 96 that would be the X300 forum he needs to visit. That said initial diagnosis would be the same no matter for me and that would be is power being sent to the starter? If not leave the ignition on and jump the starter, does the car start and run? Obviously if the starter is getting juice but not doing anything it's dead. If it isn't but starts and runs fine when you jump the starter I'd start my search at the ignition switch/starter relay/howeverthehelltheypowerthestarterinthatparticularc ar. If it isn't sending power and the car wont run when cranked over by jumping the starter that's where the fun begins.

Edit: realized you just replaced the battery, too. Ground terminal good, clean and secured on both ends?

Turn the key "on" and take a peek at the gearshift indicator. Is the "P" glowing red? If not, wiggle the gearshift around and back/forth until it does. Then try starting again

Now you just have to trace it back. Likely to be something with the park safety switch as doug suggested, ignition switch, starter relay, ect.

I think its called an inhibitor switch that fits to the gear select shifter so it will only start in park or neutral as Doug suggested.
