Bugga.

Old age has taken its toll.

Chat with Doug about a dizzy, and also a S3 dizzy, with black box, and coil, and convert it to electronic. That was the best upgrade I ever did to my S2's, and the S Type.

Failing that maybe Gary at Jagayre in Melbourne. He seems to be rising up with these older models according to some of the guys here?.

I dont have one of either, or it would be on its way.

Jim, do you have any contacts in Sydney that may have a distributor. I have not tried to source parts from Sydney before.
I will take you up on that offer if the need arises, can you PM me your contact details.

First cab off the rank tomorrow was going to be Doug, always helpful and always next day delivery if ordered before 3pm.

I have had a few conversations with Gary Ayre, another supplier happy to take time on the phone. He drives S1's himself and has a good stock of parts.

The third option I have used in Melbourne before is Phil Pietsch at Jag Prestige Spares, but would be last resort as both Paul (paulyling) and myself have had extended delivery times and parts not exactly the condition described. But buying used parts is a bit hit and miss sometimes.

Electronic is the way to go if I can? I have been told that by Mr VW across the road.

Any ideas where pricing should be, never bought a dizzy before.(ball park figure)

Working the next 3 days so hopefully I can make time tomorrow morning to sneak in a few phone calls.

Last S3 "kit" I bought was a loooooong time ago, and I paid $180 for the lot.

A points dizzy should be no more than $60 inc cap and rotor, I would have thought.

A S1 dizzy without a worn plate or shaft should be no more than $65 in MY opinion.

She still hasn't failed to proceed, but not running well enough to get up the drive. Had to leave it outside with a storm coming and hail hitting other parts of Brisbane. Got soaked through trying to get it running better but gave up when the lightning got close.
Stuck there for a few days now, won't be home during daylight until Thursday.

Yep, the storms seem to be coming through most arvo's just like the good old days when I first moved to Brisbane.
If its not hail and rain it's fire and wind.

I ordered an S3 electronic dizzy from Jagdaim today, comes with coil, leads etc. They have them removed from the car and packed as a complete kit ready to post, $300 delivered. Should arrive tomorrow.
Anything I need to know about fitting it (Grant). I know you have word docs on all these things somewhere in your filing system.
I'm hoping this will sort all my problems, yet to see.

Got it running well enough tonight to get back up the drive into the garage, it will be much more comfortable working there than out on the road in Qld summer. So much easier to work on when not being pelted by a storm and watching the lightning getting closer.

Thanks Grant, I knew I could count on your library to come to the rescue.
Job booked for Thursday morning, beats the hell out of hanging Christmas lights like I had planned.

A couple of ideas as to how to get a distributor with a loose late and loose bushings
to run sorta decent. Enough to scale your Matterhorn, mebbe.

Remove and plug the vacuum advance. Block the centrigfual advance. It is now a static time only.Set at about 18degrees BTDC. A guess only, it might crank OK on a bit more.

Now, the main event. Compensate for a wobbly shaft. A standard point gap
will not work. Ragged running at best. Set the gap tight. The starter must spin the engine over pretty good. As in spinning a top, the distributor shaft will find center. and a decent gap/dwell and the engine will run fairly well. Bodge? No question!!!

I did it on my old Ford Y block 312, til I got a decent distributor...

Sumpin I no longer do!!! Untangle a string or more. Get on a ladder attach the string to the rafter tails or fascia. Plug in to an extension. find an outside plug.

Way back when, dear departed and I decided to shine the light. Smallish brown paper bags along the walkway and front walk of ur house in El Centro, CA.
Add sand to keep them in place. Add a lighted votive candle. No other lights. Just the warm candle light through the brown paper. Very pleasant Keep close watch.
That fire thing....

The good Dr Phill(my mechanic mate) had a day off today and new time was pressing for the forum run this weekend, decided he would come over today and sort fireball while I was at work.
But the parts didn't arrive, so he removed the old dizzy and drank some beer, then sorted wiring from Grant's word doc, then drank some more beer.
He also sorted a couple of niggling issues while here.

Hope the new dizzy arrives tomorrow. it was shipped Monday overnight? Christmas rush, they are blaming.

The official diagnosis was "this thing is shagged", but we new that.

it is important.

New dizzy arrived yesterday, all fitted up but no go!

Thanks for the phone calls last night Grant, we will go over everything again this arvo to make sure we haven't missed something.

Conversation is all clear now black box is open. Going to pick up a spare bent boomerang (as you call it) just in case we need it, can return if not required.

Default Sorted

We found a wiring issue, from using my cheap connectors and crimping tool.
Phill made up a new harness with waterproof connectors from his kit and she fired up instantly with a near perfect idle.

Looks like we are off on the forum run Sunday in a Jag.

Nice work. I appreciate old school stuff and get to fiddle with points and stuff on my little Morris. For a car I want to drive a lot and take away a lot , I will take the electronic version every time. Trading off simplicity for performance I guess but electronics are pretty well sorted these days , judging by the lack of cars on the roadside. My older mechanic mates tell me there are a lot of young blokes that haven't even seen a set of points (I hope the exaggerate).

The machine is nearing mechanical perfection. You will have to start moving onto more poncy threads on trim, accessories and upholstery :-)

Enjoy :-)

Phill tells me stories about the young mechanics when he was still working in dealerships. ( he builds air con units for Qld Rail these days)
They are more plug and play guys these days, just remove and replace what the computer tells them to. I have more mechanical and diagnostic skills than some of them by the sound of it.
