Hello All,
I got the brakes bled on my 85 XJ6 and the brakes still do not lock up. I think I have very little boost even though the brake pedal is not as hard as when you have a total lost of the brake booster. When I apply the brake, I hear a hissing sound coming from the brake booster so I believe it is on its way out.
I do not hear the hissing sound all the time.
When I apply the brake to start the car, the pedal moves down as it should when the car starts.
Given that I may need a brake booster, where can I get a new one.
Does anyone have a part number? Is it a GM brake booster?

I am pretty sure the brake booster (servo over this side) is the same as on the pre ABS 1985 XJS. David Manners have them, RGP on the XJS forum has fitted one, and I have one ready to fit when I get the urge:

Not GM.

Lots of places rebuild boosters; there might be someone fairly close to you. Might be worth considering.

The hiss sounds suspcious. But even a good booster will give a faint 'whoosh' sound

Lack of braking power can also be pads that have not "bedded in".

Cheers
DD

My 83 with new pads all around will not lock up the brakes and lay down skid rubber. never has. It just squats and stops!!
