OK, I need some advice on how auto transmissions are kept oil tight. My 1973 series 1 is fitted with the BW model 12 box. Over the years I have always noticed some oil accumulating on the bottom cover for the torque converter. (for those unfamiliar with this model, the cover is louvered and open).
Looking at the parts catalogue I see no seal listed for where the gearbox input shaft enters the torque converter. I know that the front seal of the model 12 box does NOT leak oil.
Q. How does the shaft seal? I believe the oil is pumped through the hollow centre of the gearbox shaft to the torque converter, so is it just the centrifugal force that keeps the oil from leaking out of the torque converter? Am I understanding this all correctly?

 

The snout of the converter is a machined item, and fits snuggly through the front seal, also known as the pump seal, thats it.

The pump housing to the trans casing has a paper gasket from memory, and that bit is fuzzy. I dont remember an o/ring there as well, its been a loooong while.
