Well, my car has one of Dakota digital's products. Used to phase GM to Jaguar for the speedo. a ton of dip switches to configure to do it. But, my "harness" maker screwed up. No speedo wire from the PCM!!!! So, the DD is trying to phase VSS to speedo.
Not quite able to do it. Speedo reads 49 at an actual 25!!!

I have another way to do it. and sooner or later, after getting past my starter travail, I'll do it.

Point being, I did consult with a tech at DD and found him very helpful.
and, once having identified my unit, I went on line and down loaded the manual
More help.

Most tach's use the make and break wire at at coil - . So, is your issue, V8 signals
to a tach expecting I6 signals?

Repeat:

1. Down load the DD manual if you don't have it.
2. Consult with the DD tech.

Carl, yes it's i6 to v8. I was just going to wire it in to the back of the tach, but the diagram shows two wires going in when there are three! I did call Suncoast who I bought it from and the guy who answered is also a member of the "I hate jaguar electrics club". He told me he wasn't sure which to wire it into after looking at the diagram on his end but that the most common place was the white wire coming off of the ignition.

That's fine but if I do it that way, does the signal for the tach go into the ignition or come out? Wiring is a new concept for me so sometimes I am a little lost on power flow and such.

Go to the Jaguar schematic, S57. All Jaguar there, of course. but, sub in, on paper or in your mind, the GM ignition. Connect. But, insert the DD as per it's manual.

Your ignition coil, of whatever genre has three wires. One easily ID'd as HT and eliminated. The other comes from the ignition switch to the + post. eliminate that one, not it. that leaves one. That is the signal used by the tach.

Sorry, I don't know how the DD connects. Check with their manual or their tech.

Others modify the tach internally to accommodate the V8 signal.

If you need the ignition page from the S57 contact me PM, and I'll scan it for you.

But, as a DIY Jaguar owner, you need to find one.

Default Series 1 different than later cars

If you take out the Tach, the car will not start... you must jump the two White wires together to complete the circuit... Ignition Relay is involved and
the other end goes to the ballast resistor and coil. See the S1 wiring diagram from the Service Manual...

Green wire to Tach is power from Fuse 1...

Instead of using the "box" send the Tach to a good shop to be converted internally to modern V8 specs - Redline Gauge Works in CA has done two for
me over the years. looks stock but works 100% without the add on box. You can even screw in LED's while it is out to get better lighting.

Rev Counter = Tach is located in upper RH side of the electrical diagram.

I actually have a Mazda, yup that's right, Mazda ignition coil. I guess the po had a spare or something...atleast the key says Mazda, the barrel says xj6. Either way, where can I can the manual? I have a Chilton, or are we talking about some other manual?

Roger, since I have the DD interface I'm going to use it, but I may send the speedometer off to be reset as sitting with the old cable and a power drill is a major waist of time. I looked through my service manual at the wiring diagram and it's not clear which wire to tap into. I tried looking at the one you linked but it's blurry and upside down...anything on the disc you sent me I could use?

I solve the picture thing by printing it and then manually do the 180!

Roger was kind enough to email them to me so I could download them. Can you take a picture of your service manual so I know what I'm looking for?

Email me PM and I'll scan the page S57 manual. It will clarify one way to use the DD.
