Electric door locking system XJ6 S3 86 American
Ok guys.
I'm back at it again.
This time I am working on the door lock system for the XJ6. I've managed to get 3 of the doors working perfectly including the driver's side. However, the passenger side isn't playing nice. I rebuilt the original actuator and rewelded and sealed the plastic. The actuator works like new now.
And I'm also reading about a 10 volt pulse when I actuate the controls. However, when I plug the rebuilt actuator in and try the controls I get bupkis. If I test the actuator with a 12 volt AA battery pack I get normal actuation so I'm sure it's not the actuator. What else could be wrong? Dirty connectors? I thought about building an amplifier circuit and driving the lock in sync, but independent. I could do that, but I really don't want to do that.

Ok, I've figured out what was the problem. I have a solinoid lock system, and a motor lock replacement part. Apparently I was looking at the wrong schematic for my model. I did up a dual spdt motor controller adapter and now the motorized lock part works perfectly with the rest of the system... With one caveat. Apparently, one wire in the door is dead. I know from looking at the schematic that I have separate lock and unlock relays and that they are located on each side of the car (why, I have no idea). However, while I know the general vicinity of the relay, I don't know exactly where they are. I'm hoping they aren't mounted under the carpet that an OCD owner put in. The carpet wraps all the way up to the dash from the floor. The thought of taking carpet off and reinstalling it is making me cringey.
thanks for the input and guidance. I can post a diagram for how I made the adapter part if anyone is interested.
By the way, this is not the original door for this car, and that is how I got the two systems mixed. I used a door with a different locking system apparently.

Your '86 should have the motorized system, not solenoids....as the motorized system replaced the solenoid system part-way thru the 1985 model year.
The motorized system didn't use relays.....so you shouldn't have them. Only the solenoid system cars had the relays and they were located behind the 'kick panels' in each footwell
Good job at making the oddball system work !

Huh, ok. Well now I'm confused. I've gone and merged an 86 with bits from an 83 (doors etc) but I only replaced the one door, and it is the one I'm working on. Thanks for the info though. I guess I'll figure it out once I've been through the exploratory surgery bit. Appreciate the info. At least now I'll know what I'm looking at if I find it. Through a little sleuthing I've learned that my car has been rebuilt 3 times now. I never know what to expect with this thing anymore. I've probably cut 50 percent of it's wires out now because they were poorly done by the last hillbilly that had it before me. Lol. I've found wire nuts! Anyway, thanks for the heads up, and I'll see you once the smoke clears.
