Electric fans

V12 or 6cyl?
The normal set up for most Jags is mechanical fan running all the time and the small electric fan coming on when the A/C is turned on, although this appears to be year and model dependant. The small electric fan should also come on when a temp switch closes signifying the coolant is getting hot.
If you have dual electric fans in front of the rad, I suspect that's a modification. Fitting dual electric fans and removing the mechanical fan and smaller electric fan is a common mod on V12 cars (sedans and XJ-S), but they are usually put behind the rad as they are puller fans. Mounting them in front or the rad would likely reduce the airflow through the radiator at speed (not a good idea)

This PDF might be useful in this case and others. See page 10 for your present issue.

On the Series II-III 6-cyl cars the e-fan or fans do NOT come on with the AC compressor. Temp controlled only.
Some older Jag tech literature suggests otherwise but there was some incorrect editing that confused V12 and 6-cylinder schemes.
Series II and Early Series III XJ6s had two electric fans. Later...maybe 1982-ish?.....a change was made that replaced one of the fans with an engine oil cooler
Cheers

Hello Doug,
Many thanks for this info re cooling systems applied during the crossover years of SeriesII to SeriesIII in both XJ6/12. I might add that there is also some variance according to market destination . . . many coming out here to the (generally) hotter climate of Australia appear to have the twin e/fan, but with so much scope for after market upgrades, it is difficult to be precise.
Cheers,
Ken

When my 83 came to us in 2001, it was an original base model. One E fan in front of the radiator and the big oil cooler there as well.
The E fan now hangs on my shop wall. Why, I've not the slightest.
The cooler and lines left with the damaged 4.2. Free to a collector free old Jag stuff!!!
He got a healthy BW66 attached to it??
The price of a happy wife. Cheap, no doubt about it.
