Default Electronic Ignition Options for Series 1 and 2 Cars

Hi All,

As most who run earlier Jags will be aware, the Points system inside the Distributer can be a right pain in the behind and for that reason many have opted for something more reliable.

I too would like to upgrade my ignition system and would like to know what people are using. I would guess that the options from Lumenition would be the most popular as they have been around the longest.

However, here's an interesting system that I like the look of, mainly as I run a Megasuirt MS1 ECU on my Renault. It uses the EDIS6 components from Ford and is fully mappable, which means there are some performance gains to be had too.

The system has been created for an E-Type but could easily be adapted for any XK Engined car. This thread has all the details:

Like I have said, I would love to hear what systems others are using and there thoughts on value for money, performance and cost.

Look forward to your replies.

Woz

I have heard nothing but nightmares with these electronic ignitions, so I can't share any experience since I would not touch them with a ten yard pole, though I agree with you the original ignition is a pain, but that's the price we pay for playing with classic toys.

Umpteen good choices out there. Crane, Pertronix, 1-2-3 Ignition, etc.

One very easy and cheap alternative is the CEI from a Ser III XJ6. Nothing razzle-dazzle about it but it's but a solid, simple, reliable ignition.

Cheers

I think only the Petronix is mappable out of that lot and costs the same money?

I think the Megajolt set-up has a few advantages over the rest but, I'm happy to concede if I'm wrong:

- In general a Coil Pack will produce a far stronger spark than that of a traditional Coil.

- The MJ takes it's timing from a Trigger Wheel fitted to the Crank and therefore there is no mechanical play like that, that 'can' be found in a Dizzy based set-up.

- The EDIS system has an inbuilt 'limp home' mode.

The real advantage of modern EFI was the mappable ignition, more so than fuel control as you can get pretty close on fuel with a well set up Carb but, ignition advance control using Bob Weights and Vacuum Advance are a bit crude.

FWIIW, I have used Pertronix in half a dozen applications over a period of 15 - 20 years without any problems.

Great feedback Per, just what I was after.

It would seem that the Pertronix unit have great feedback in general. Obviously a quality product.
