Default Engine swap query

Hi all, pretty new to these cars and don’t know much about the 4.2 engine yet so wondered if a 1986 series 3 4.2 engine would be a suitable transplant for a 1976 version? It has been converted to carburettors so would there be any other issues? Or is it a bad choice for any reason? Thanks for any help.

I have series 3 engine in my 73 series one, twin carbs fitted. No problem.
I have S3 electronic ignition as well.

Thanks. Think I would prefer electronic ignition too.

One small thing I ran into.....

The '76 will have a throttle cable/trans cable bracket bolted to the back of the right head, using the cam cover end plug bolts.
The S3 heads didn't use the half moon seals and end cap, so they stopped drilling and tapping the holes at the back of the head.
I got the engine all hooked up only to find no way to mount the throttle bracket.
If you drill and tap the head BEFORE you install the engine you will be fine.
Good luck,
Rob.

You may find that the crankshaft pulley/drive belt are mis-aligned and you will need to find the relevant offset components.
