Usually the best test of a business or organisation is what they do when things go wrong. It can be a great opportunity to build loyalty and customer referrals. Like car insurance, the focus is on premiums but a few $ saved on premiums is quickly forgotten when the service is crap when you have to claim.

He has said on more than one occasion it is a problem he will get to the bottom of, his biggest concern is that I will get stranded with a failure.
Being that the rattle is only there for a very short time when totally cold it is a hard one to chase down. He wants to check as much as possible before having to go to the point of removing the engine.

From the few times I have met him and the many phone conversations I have had he comes across as a guy who stands by his work, word and warranty. He has said he will build another short motor for me if it comes to that.

I already know from the track days the engine is strong and reliable, but something is not quiet right there. I wouldn't have a second thought about driving it to Melbourne tomorrow if I had to.

Arrived back in Australia today to hear Fireball's engine rattle has been sorted.
Thanks to Murray Scoble at Peninsula Jag Engine Centre for the after sales service, and Dr Phill for managing the communication with him while I was away.
I will post details once I speak to Murray when I pick the car up Tuesday.

Problem is ...you are opening a can of worms..the world of "might as well"
i.e. - Might as well change the timing chain(s)...might as well replace the bearings...might as well replace all the studs...etc. etc. getting all the worms back in the can is the problem... but when/if you finally do,..you still have a 4000 pound car with a 6 cylinder engine and a 3 speed transmission and 13 MPG (if you are lucky) and the possibility of it happening again (as in my case) So maybe buying a rebuilt engine , a transmission adaptor plate and installing a 700r4 trans behind the Jag 6 cylinder ....might be the best of all worlds...but will need many $$$$.

This is not an inexpensive problem to overcome, in terms of time AND money.
Those are the just the facts.... the answers that you will get, if you ask those who "used to have a Jag like that" why they sold it. Head gasket problems and related expense of maintaining an obsolete drive train in today's world of precision built performance engines and 6 speed transmissions.

Given the same problem,...I would do the same thing again, - GM EFI V8 with OD 4 speed trans...good as it gets with these cars. ( my 3 cents)

Seriously, Clarke, as you were on my Continent you could At Least have stopped by for a beer! Or even two! What's a couple thousand mile side trip after you've crossed the Pacific?
I'm a bit disappointed!

Welcome back. Really.

Hi alynmurray
not being rude but this was a brand new motor that we did not scrimp on so as to keep the car original, however a problem occurred a couple of days after we got it back on the road. We have taken it back to our engine builder who has sorted out the problem with the professionalism of his business and reputation with no problems. we are very thankful of his full support with regard to our issues and would recommend Murray Scoble of Peninsular Jag to any one who requires mechanical repairs or engines. he backed his product 100 o/o.

Yeah!!!

But, fixed while away!! Hard to beat that. I'm sure you enjoyed the
time away from "stuff".

I'll not pontificate on:

a. 100 pounds or so less weight.
b. An additional one cubic litre.
c. About 100 more HP's.
d. A lot more torque.
e. OD.
f. Cheaper GM parts.
G. A far more advanced engine management
system.

But, those cam covers sure do look great !!!

Carl

Sorry Elinor, but it took me 3 hours online to get a visa to cross the border at Port Huron so her indoors and my daughter could go shopping.
Really we just wanted to say we had been to the US and get a stamp on the passport, but being a duel citizen of AUS/NZ the border security couldn't understand why I had 2 citizenships. After fingerprints and eye scans we got in. And a full car search and interview.
Back in the world of driving on the correct side of road is great, I can drive and talk here without cars coming from the wrong direction.

I purchased this motor on the reputation of Murray Scoble of Peninsula Jag Engine Centre knowing we would get a great product with his warranty backing. Yes,we had a minor issue and he backed it 100%.
Would not hesitate to recommend him to any forum members.
Full support given,no matter what.

Dont go driving on "The Right Side" here, or you will be in strife.

I think you meant the "CORRECT SIDE".

The culprit turned out to be the whitemetal bearing in the intermediate gear for the timing chains had failed. Now replaced and problem solved.

5313 miles done on this engine, 9 litres of oil and filter added today.
All good, oil came out nearly as clean as the new stuff.

Any excuse to add a picture of the beautiful engine and the good Dr.
