Amp meter or Volt meter? Since the advent of alternators over generators in the 50s and 60s volt meters are highly prefered for safety reasons.

Way back when, I did wire critters with amp meters. for the life of me, I do not recall using a negative on one of the posts. the meter as I recall, is in series on the main + feed to the system!! But, today, not feasible. Just too many amps. for an example, my LT1's alternator shoots out as many a s 140 amps if needed!!!

The last car I had with an ammeter, was our 66 Mustang. About 35 amps on its meter!!!

Now, it just might be possible to use an inductance meter. Beyond my pay grade....

Since my OEM volt meter is so slow to react, I have a LED voltmeter that inserts into the cigar lighter (that I bought cheap off eBay). Works great!

And, way back, my first car. A 23 T Ford. the only meter on it's dash, an ammeter.

And my electronicaly gifted pal came up with a way to use two on his A. One to read + and the other to read -. It took some decades for me to figure that one out!!!!
