Default Heater Core(matrix), is it directional?

Hi all, is the heater core(matrix) on my S1 XJ6 directional or doe's it not matter which way the coolant flows through it?

I am about connect up the heater to see why it has been bypassed. I have run the garden hose through the core and it doesn't seem to leak anywhere inside the car(aircon and radio out at the moment so I can see under the dash clearly).

All vacuum seems to work ok, air flap opens and closes with modulator. Heater tap opens and closes when changing the heat control modulator. As far as I can tell there is no reason to bypass the core(maybe it will leak under pressure) ,only one way to find out.

The heater tap has a flow direction arrow on it, I have drawn a diagram to show what I have at the moment,I just need to know if the tap is in the right place and flowing the right direction and which is the inlet and outlet on the firewall. From all my books nothing shows the hoses connected to the core, they just refitting is the reverse of removing. That is ok if you removed the hoses yourself.

Maybe someone has their car handy and pop their head under the bonnet for a quick check?
Thanks in advance.

Clarke,
Here are a couple pictures/diagrams of my heater hoses.
White comes from the water pump.
Red comes from the manifold.

I hope you can follow this.
My heater works well, or at least it did last time I used it.

Thanks Elinor, I have connected the hose from the thermostat that passes through the heater tap to the top inlet and connected the hose that goes to the water pump to the lower outlet.
All seems to work fine, not sure why the heater was bypassed in the first place. Just got to flush the coolant now as it has turned from green to brown after operating the heater and flushing all the crap out of the core/matrix.

The only thing I can see that may have been the problem was the two hose clamps connecting the hoses to the Core were NFG so maybe they were not tight and under pressure coolant was leaking into the cabin.

Replaced the coolant and drove for about an hour turning heater on and off and changing from cabin to demist etc, all worked as it should.

We will never use the heater in Queensland winter, maybe only for demisting in the wet season. Probably another job I didn't really need to do.

What size are the hoses internally?? I want to bypass my heater tap in the engine bay for now as it leaks when it fully open(?) I want it to act as if the heater is always on, as at the moment I don't get any real warmth at all inside. I only use the aircon to demist the windscreen right now as it is stuffed otherwise. It needs a new part (the name escapes me right now, it controls the vac hoses etc. Not the amplifier or relay, the other thing buried way in the back). As it getting into winter here and my screen mists up very fast I need it to work.

Hi Richard,
I am just guessing here but i would think ID to be 5/8 , I could just get a vernier caliper on to the outlets on the firewall with a hot engine. Pretty sure they are approx 16mm give or take a mm each way for the angle I had to go in at.

You could possibly just cable tie the tap open, that is what I did while I was checking for leaks. Just press the lever down to open the tap(if yours is the same) and cable tie it around the vacuum canister.

The pic is of the series 1 heater system, maybe you can name the part from it.

That is one Sorry looking hose clamp, Clarke! I wonder why that hose might have been leaking!? HA!

Members with far more experience than I have said I didn't need to worry about the air tubes to the back seat too, but it wasn't Right, and if only for that reason I HAD to fix it. I understand Completely!

Side bar:

I added a "summer/winter" valve to mine. Merely a plumbing lever valve with barb'd adapters. spliced into the hose that did not have the vacuum valve.

Result; Both in off mode, the matrix gets no hot water. Actuate the fans, and I get power venting of ambient temp air. Good in spring and fall.

The bizareness continues. Looped heater core that apparently works fine. A/C all in place but not assembled. The story behind all that would be interesting. Either the PO is one of those people that does 90% of everything and 100% of nothing or they just reached a stage where they just wanted to move on regardless of where the car was at.

The PO is a mechanic of all things. A good mate of mine was his workshop foreman 9 years ago at a dealership(I won't mention which), but he was moved to "pre-delivery" preparing new vehicles and adding accessories for customers.....no more need be said.

Sounds like the Fireball acquisition was as much a rescue as a purchase. Must be enjoying all the love :-)

This model and mileage is selling for 18-23 K, I walked away parting with $11'300,lol. 74'700km. I started looking on Thursday for a KK Cherokee, wasn't planning on buying for a couple of weeks,or until I at least off loaded one car, now I have 3 six cylinder cars due for rego in December($880 each)
Didn't look at mileage or log book , myself and mates took an hour to crawl all over and under said beast,we drove it. All good, one oil leak I assume is rear main seal(easy fix).
Anyway, I started looking over my new garage dweller tonight. It turns out it has had 2 services in it's life. So that means 2 oil changes in 70k. Guess what,I'm buying oil and filter tomorrow . Trans has no dipstick so I will google a solution for that.
Here we go again..................
Log book shows Pre-delivery check,Service at 47'999km at one year old, next and final entry is a service at 56,386km at 2 years old. It is now showing 74,700km.
I love a challenge. I was prepared to part with 20k for the right KK cherokee. So I am ahead, just don't know yet if spending the 20k would have been a better option as this will become the daily driver for my wife since I(we) are selling her Mazda 3. She drives about 10 km a week as she walks to work and the kids catch buses these days. So I should be safe for a while!

1.5 x 30 litre bins of crap off the floor and in the boot. cut seat covers off and threw away mats(yuk).
I only looked after the mechanical side of it. When I drove it on Saturday I was bit like being in a public toilet, not wanting to touch door handles etc.
All good now, it got the daughters seal of approval when it was finished.
RWC done at work tomorrow then rego transfer and away she goes.
Yep, vehicle rescue seems to be norm around my house lately!
