I am working on my Steering column and I cant figure what the purpose of this is. It is part of the turn signal assembly. Any Ideas? I thought it was for the horn but I don't seem to have any way to activate it nor dose it move in any case.

I checked the 2 Series II columns I have here and neither have this.
Is this wire... Red/Pink or Red/White ? Red/wihite is instrument lighting. No listing red / pink on any wiring diagrams I have.
Rusty, can you take a couple photos a little further back so we can see some contex? That black canister the wires go in - what does the rest of it look like? I agree with Carl that it looks like a really solid grounding wire but is the wrong color.
It is a diode for the signaling system I am not sure its function other than it is only used when the left signal is pressed. It must be something required when the hazards are turned on (keeps it from back-feeding power?). I am rewiring the car from scratch and I discovered this while I was toning everything out. I'm not sure if I will keep it in play or not.. My new system doesn't require one.
Mystery kinda solved???
It's a coincidence that you post this since I am in a rather lengthy discussion concerning the Turn Signal Dash light diode on this thread ( https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-191007/page2/ ) see post 32. I don't think that is the diode for two reasons (1) the wires coming from it are the wrong color (that diode's wires should be Green with White with Red Tracer) and (2) the diode is said to be in the harness.). See Fig 7.1 in S57 for the Turn Signal Wiring Diagram.
ON edit. The third reason is that there should be two of these diodes if this were the turn signal lamp diode and I only see one.

Reason: Three reasons actually
In the UK you used to be able to park on either side of the road (facing the wrong way!) Not sure if you still can?
It was requirement that you showed lights during night hours. To save power the cars were fitted with a circuit whereby once the car was switched off you could move the indicator stalk to one side and only that side park lights would illuminate
What loom are you using to rewire? A refurbed xj one or a generic kit? I'm not as far in as you yet - i am still in process of slowly removing old loom, lots of pictures and sticky labels on wires....trying to decide whether to go with a kwik wire loom as I've used them in other builds...or refurb original...
I went with this Ron Francis Kit. (I didn't know about quick wire).+ some relay panels under the hood. I am using relays with original switches. and some other modern doodads. It is a crazy amount of work but I love it! one my vices I guess.

My brain just imagined " A small European town in winter underneath a clear mountain sky at dusk with beautiful old cars politely lighting the way"!
In reality it probably was narrow dark streets and you left your side lights on praying you car didn't get wiped out overnight........
