Default High beam troubles

Hi, having an issue with my 1986 xj6 sovereign where my headlights work but when I flick on my high beams my right headlight turns off and my right high beam stays off. I don’t think a bulb would be the issue here but I’m open to all suggestions! Thanks.

check and roll the fuses at the headlights fuse box located by the coolant fill tank. There are 5 fuses: 1 for each headlight and the fifth is for the auxiliary cooling fan.

if that does not correct it, check the grounds bolted to the bonnet next to each light.

[QUOTE=Jose;2191436]check and roll the fuses at the headlights fuse box located by the coolant fill tank. So my contacts were all corroded as it seems the previous owner lost the lid, a wire brush fixed this, thanks so much!

the fuse holders or "brass springs" corrode less with the lid on. use emery paper to clean them shiny. disconnect battery first.

you can also re-bend the brass springs/holders gently to trap the fuses tighter using needle nose pliers.
I have spare lids if you can't find one.

In some other forums I have found, this would have been called a Dumb Question, and the poster would have been subjected to all manner of abuse for having the ignorance (which is no sin, just means you haven't learned yet) and lacking the skill to search forum history (again, simply because they don't know how).

That's what makes this place so great: There's no such nonsense here. Every poster, no matter their skill level, is treated with respect, patience and kindness, with their dignity left intact!

Everyone had to start at the beginning sometime, even Doug, Grant and Jose.
I love this place!

I started asking dumb questions in 1989 when I bought my XJ-6. Two Jaguar-trained mechanics answered my dumb questions.
One loaned me his Technician's Shop Manual and told me "here, read and learn, bring it back". Nobody ever laughed at my questions. So I never laugh at anybody's.

Early on I learned that jaguar electrics were "different" from the ones i was accustomed to. The right outboard head lamp went dark!! Easy enough, replace the sealed beam as I've done many times on other critters. Seemed a bit more quirky, but I go it done. On,,,,, still dark!!! Messed around s0ome more. Black ground wire held to the tin by a mere screw??? Removed and cleaned it!! yahoo, light came on!! Oh, well, the old one is a spare. Still is!!

Then odd response to commands ??? Flipped the fuse holder out of the captive frame. Scrubbed the contacts clean. success, light obey orders!!

Then I stumbled on to the fuse finger roll technique...

Off of light issues... Starter and run misbehaviour!!! Resolved!!!! Added a ground cable from the ground bolt to the right wing to the engine block. Behaving oh so much better..
